Project Hail Mary (2026, D: Lord & Miller) S: Ryan Gosling

I did a search and was surprised to not find a thread about this one. Based on the book by Andy Weir (who wrote The Martian, which was made into the movie with Matt Damon).

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12042730/

Set in the near future, it centers on junior high (middle) school-teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace, who wakes up from a coma afflicted with amnesia. He gradually remembers that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to find a means of reversing a solar dimming event that could cause the extinction of humanity.

I just finished the book and really enjoyed it even more than The Martian. Now that Andy Weir has the luxury of being a full-time writer, it shows. A strong story with some good twists and turns. I just hope they don't give everything away with the trailers. If you haven't read the book don't look it up, wait to experience it for yourself. Really looking forward to this one.

I really, really, really like this book!

Drew Goddard writing, Lord and Miller directing, plus Ryan Gosling is good for this role.

I'll be there on opening night.

Yeah, Hail Mary was a great book and on par with The Martian and should make a good film. The less said about Artemis the better. Still looking forward to whatever he comes up with next.

Read a little about the premise. The book sounds great. I just bought it so I could read it. Will definitely watch the movie.

Ok blasted through the book. Loved it but will be interesting to see how they adapt it.

Coincidentally, I just finished this book and loved it. My wife couldn't get through the first 40 pages. I think Ryan can do a great job with this role and hope they make a good adaptation.

Is that because he already did a great job playing an astronaut?

My only concern is they tone down the back half of the book. I need some Rocky 🎶 in my life.

Currently listening to the book on Audible and it's very good. However, kind of like The Martian I feel it needs to be read or done on audio book to get the full experience. Especially with Weir's cynical style of writing. I'm sure Gosling will do the character justice, but his internal thoughts are what make it enjoyable IMO.

Sounds like we are going to get a full trailer Monday. Not a teaser. A full trailer almost a year out of release. There is some speculation that it could get moved up and be released this year.

I just put a hold on the ebook through Libby at my library. I'm #50 on the list, and there are 5 copies. Could be a while. I was able to get Artemis right away, though, so I've started that. I read The Martian a year or so before the movie came out and loved it.

Helpful hint : Swallow your pride and request the large print edition. That’s what I did. No wait.

^Good tip. I'll finish the Artemis ebook and then maybe try that. Looks like there is one large print copy that is currently checked out.

Another helpful hint: Skip Artemis altogether and go straight to Hail Mary.

I've heard it was a bit of a letdown after The Martian, but I'll give it a go anyway.

I would be shocked if there's any Rocky in the trailer. Maybe just hinted at?

I don't understand the point of releasing the trailer tomorrow. The movie is still 9 months away and IMO there is zero point in promoting it now. In our fractured entertainment consumption world, a piece of marketing this early will get quickly forgotten.

It's just getting the name out there. No different than Vin Diesel promoting FastX2 two years before it's due out.
