Jason Bourne series future -- News, Rumors

The rights at Universal have expired. It's up for grabs

WME is shopping the rights to the spy franchise and the rest of the Robert Ludlum library on behalf of the late author’s estate.

The goal is to find a new home for the franchise and make the superspy a more regular presence onscreen. Bourne last appeared nearly a decade ago in Jason Bourne (2016), from Universal and producer Captivate Entertainment, which manages the film rights for the Ludlum estate. It is too early to say if longtime star Matt Damon would be involved in the new iteration.

Skydance, Apple and Netflix are said to have met with the estate for the rights. Universal, too, could potentially win the rights back if it made an attractive bid.

Jason Bourne sprung from the mind of novelist Ludlum, who published The Bourne Identity in 1980. Two decades later, star Damon and director Doug Liman introduced him to the big screen with 2002’s The Bourne Identity. The film, coming a few years before Daniel Craig’s grounded reinvention of James Bond with Casino Royale, ushered in a new era of spy movies that favored realism rather than high-tech gadgets.

Re: Jason Bourne series future -- News, Rumors

The first three Bourne movies are one of my favorite trilogies of all time. The last couple kind of petered out. It’s crazy to think that Jason Bourne was almost 10 years ago!

I don’t really care if they reboot the movies or make it a series (I vaguely remember a Treadstone series already but didn’t watch it). I’m sure whoever buys the rights will milk the franchise to death but whatever. The trilogy still stands.

Universal blew it. Diluting the franchise without Damon. Wasting too much time. I remember being so psyched when they announced JASON BOURNE but it ended up being one the biggest disappointments. Sounded like that proposed movie from Edward Berger was half-assed to begin with.

I thought there were talks of another Damon Bourne film recently.

Yeah that was the one Edward Berger was attached to after All Quiet on the Western Front garnered awards but there was no script or any clear idea what to do with Damon's Bourne and late last year it was clear it wasn't going to happen.

Didn’t know what to do with him? There’s like 20 Bourne books to choose from! Hell, even with Robert Ludlum dead, they’re still writing them!

I think they should reboot the franchise. The Matt Damon version is over, although I would watch a another one.

True, but for whatever reason all they ever want to use are the book titles and the names Treadstone, Jason Bourne, David Webb, Alexander Conklin, and Marie.

Wouldn't surprise me if whomever buys it will turn it into a TV series.

Staying at Universal. They re-secured the rights for perpetuity

I do wonder about how valuable the Bourne property is. I mean, Matt Damon as Jason Bourne? Sure that's probably a hit. But recast the role? Who knows. Certainly Renner didn't bring out the moviegoers despite the franchise.

And even Matt Damon as Bourne has pretty much run its course. I know there are a ton of Bourne books but I’m not sure how much life this franchise has left in it.

Both different to varying degrees, but Jack Reacher and Jack Ryan both found success as series.

I'm not sure I'd be interested in a movie now -- whoever the star -- but the deal is "in perpetuity" and existing IP seems to be a better starting point for getting audiences in the seats.

^ Maybe but there already was a series and no one watched it.

I never said it had zero value as IP, just that I’m not sure it’s much. Certainly nothing like Bond. Maybe less than Mission Impossible.
Oh well, at least Moby will keep seeing music royalties checks.

I kind of remember the Treadstone series now that you bring it up. So yeah, I'm not sure if there's any near-term ROI from the apparently "highly competitive bidding war."

Re: Jason Bourne series future -- News, Rumors

I'd be down for Damon again. I liked the fourth film, even as pointless as it was, but Damon is Bourne like Cruise is Hunt. Just give me more Damon and I'll be there.
