A matchmaker's lucrative business is complicated when she falls into a toxic love triangle that threatens her clients.

I kept waiting for that trailer to look like a good movie but the time never came.

Past Lives was phenomenal and I like A24. Bummer.

Pedro Pascal again Is he to the point of being overexposed yet?

It looks like a late 90s, early 2000s style Rom Com that Reese Witherspoon or JLo would star in. Not something that you would think A24 would do.

That tells me that maybe this isn't quite what it seems. But who knows. Past Lives was my favorite movie of 2023 and I need to believe that Chris Evans will be in a good movie again, so I'm in.

The trailer had me leaning in this direction as well. It just seems too ‘pat’ to be coming from A24 – in June no less – and not have something up its sleeve beyond being a ‘hit’ director’s sophomore work. At the same time, PAST LIVES was such an utterly personal film that I’ve wondered since I saw it whether Celine Song might be a one-trick pony, and this trailer, if it turns out to be depicting exactly what we’ll get, doesn’t do much to dispel that feeling. Definitely want to see it based on her earlier film, which I loved, but also wary that it’s exactly what it appears to be, which would make me wait until I could get it from the library or stream it. Hopefully further marketing might yield some clues.

Yeah, this is an A24 joint. I'm watching the trailer and expecting a monster or cult to show up, but it never happens.

I'll likely go see this. It doesn't seem like it's totally a Rom Com, Romantic Dramedy maybe. Anyone But You was a decent sized hit when it came out and Hollywood has yet to fully bring back Rom Coms in theaters.

I saw Celine Song was writer/director and immediately figured it'll be soul crushing

I'm pretty sure this is the next Screen Unseen/Mystery Movie Monday title on June 2nd.

Edit: Nope, it was Life of Chuck

Still looks like a Rom Com. I don't see any "insidious" twist coming just because it's "A24"

We won't know until we see some reviews.

Ok I guess that makes more sense. Otherwise DVD Talk would be kicking and screaming about a 2 1/2 hour Rom Com

How many times has Pedro Pascal been in something over the past year?

Gladiator 2, Last of Us, Freaky Tales, Drive Away Dolls, SNL, Uninvited, Wild Robot, Materialists and Eddington

I haven't seen any of those this year but still seems like he's been in everything

Re: Materialists (2025, W/D: Celine Song) S: Johnson, Pascal, Evans (A24)

Celine is 2/2 for me. I loved this. The cast was great. The writing while still strong is almost as heartbreaking as in Past Lives. This is NOT a 90s rom-com. The trailers on post 1 and 7 sell this incredibly wrong. The trailer on post 11 is unnecessary, just dumb. Honestly, it's kinda hard to sell this without trying to make it like a rom-com. There is no twisted turn, nothing that you would come to expect from A24. It's what you should come to now expect from Celine.
It has some funny lines but it's much more dramatic and deeper. No slapstick or anything like that. A real look at modern dating. Fun fact: Celine once worked as a matchmaker. The ONLY thing I didn't like was the first scene in the first trailer where she stops the guy and tells him she is a matchmaker. That just wasn't a good believable delivery but thankfully it gets out of the way early because it just got better from there.

Good to know that this is actually a real drama and the trailers were deceptive. Planning to see it Sunday. I'm also a fan of Past Lives.

It's currently at 87% on RT

I'm going to go see this if it's still in theaters in a couple weeks. I don't have any free time until the 22nd or 23rd to go to the theater. I think it looks great. I'm staying out of this thread to avoid spoilers until I go watch it.

I saw this today. It's fantastic. My favorite film of the year, so far.

I enjoyed it too. The comedy aspects are just the absurdity of the upper 40s men all having the requirement of young fit women, and the upper 30s women all requiring 6' tall, full hair and high salaries. The movie felt long, I suppose the sexual assault situation was supposed to add some epiphany to the main character in her job and current relationships, but it didn't really work for me. I guess it showed her which boyfriend was more in tuned to her feelings and willing to help.

I've heard that movie nails the truth about the comodification of dating today.
