Not sure where to post - am considering selling large collection
Sorry folks. Even though I've been a member here a long, long time, I haven't posted much in last decade. Yep, I've been here a long, long time!
Anyway, here is my post.
I have been collecting DVDs since the days of 800.com and before the VENTURE DEPT. STORES went out of business. So, maybe 25+ years.
It is comprised of so many different, popular titles but I have never maintained a list. Yet, they completely fill two shelving units which measure approximately 7' tall, and 4' to 5'wide. They are absolutely stacked. I use to tell people I have more movies that BLOCKBUSTER and they closed their doors at the turn of this century...
Anyway, I would say that it's well over a thousand, maybe even 1700. AND, astounding, maybe half are UNOPENED. AND, they are mostly very popular movies, maybe out of print?
It's a lot of DVDs and BluRays. A LOT.
Now comes the point - I am considering selling the ENTIRE COLLECTION AS ONE SALE.
As such, and before my kids donate them, I am posting here and a couple of other places to see if there is interest out there and what the offers are - FOR THE ENTIRE COLLECTION. And I can take a bunch of pictures to try and capture the titles, etc., but I want to finalize the sale by MARCH 27, 2025.
THE movies and I are in central ILLINOIS. Reach me here or I can figure out how to post my email; it's just that i havent posted in long time too and not sure if I am doing this correctly. Thank you.
BOB

Personally, I could never afford to buy someone's entire collection, lock, stock, and barrel, nor would I want to without knowing what I was buying. I can appreciate that you need to unload these videos, perhaps someone here is wealthy enough to buy, sight unseen, an entire collection. I wish you luck in your endeavor however.
I think you might have better luck selling them individually, but I understand your need to have the sale completed within a 10 day time frame.
If you were willing to sell them individually, a list would be a good place to start, and the DVD Exchange forum would probably be your best bet.
Good luck!

My two cents: probably nobody out there who would buy that large of a collection except a re-seller who would want to buy for pennies on the dollar. But also, good luck! You are an OG member!

I was going to post what Kurt has stated. Be prepared to sell well below the market value, if it all has to go at once.
You could also try places like FaceBook Marketplace, or eBay.
Good luck with your sale!

Thanks all.
I kind of thought that. Hate selling as I love movies of all types. And, i got into it for the quality of fhe video and audio - which has continued to improve over the years.
It's just that family wont want them. So they would be donated or, God forbid....tossed! And thats too painful to think about!!

That's what I "lucked" into back around 2018/19... A guy opening a used media shop. Sold off 98% of my CDs and DVDs in one shot. Could I have possibly got more listing separately? Maybe... but not worth the time it would have taken. By that point streaming had already taken over music so I was lucky to get rid of all of them in one shot.

I'm within driving distance of you to come and get them, but I don't have extra money on hand for 1,700 titles.
I hope you're doing okay. I get the impression something in life is changing for you?
Glad you posted.

As others have said, this is going to be a tough one. It's a big collection, a mix of formats, and mostly popular movies. To me that means its going to be a bunch of titles that a lot of people already own. Popular titles, that probably have several different releases over the years.
I'd be looking for a used shop or maybe a library or house of worship to donate them to. Maybe a school? I know my college had a very extensive laserdisc collection and was just starting a dvd collection at the time I was last there.

Yeah, if you're looking to sell in a lot, you're going to end up getting, maybe a quarter per unit if you're lucky.
DVDs and other video discs have fallen out of favor these days, so it's not a seller's market. Also doesn't help that most of your titles are "popular," which means they'll be common and in low-demand.
If I were in this position, I'd cherry pick the titles that might hold some value (ie, out-of-print cult films, limited editions, concerts) and then try to move the low-interest material as a bulk sale, then sell off the valuable ones individually through eBay or Craigslist.

Unless you really need the money, I would pick out the ones which are important to you and donate the rest for a tax write off. Finding anyone to buy the whole lot could take years.

Re: Not sure where to post - am considering selling large collection
A local thrift store had thousands of titles priced at 4 for a $1 over the weekend and they didn't sell very many. Anything remotely valuable or watchable gets bought-up leaving behind the usual "Ocean's Eleven" full screen copies behind.
If you have the time and space you can hold a Dutch auction-style garage sale advertised on craigslist/FB Marketplace where everything is, say, $5 per title. The following Saturday (or the next Sunday) every title is $1. The "if you wait, you may miss-out" concept works quite well and hopefully you get the higher prices for the better titles.
