The Surfer (2025, D: Lorcan Finnegan) S: Nicolas Cage

In the psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is “don’t live here, don’t surf here.” Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point.

I love how Cage has basically become a genre in and of himself.

Fuck it, I’ll watch it. It looks entertaining.

…But, “eat the rat!” Could very well be the next “not the bees!” for Cage.

May be, but this time he seems more self aware.

Free ticket to see this via Fandango.

Use the promo code SURFER

You can also use it for the Early Access screening with Q&A next Wednesday.

The code is worth $15. I went ahead and used it for next Friday the 2nd at a non AMC theater I like. Paid 19 cents.

This movie was not for me at all. I actually walked out after an hour. Cage's character is totally not likable at all. He's actually pretty sad and pathetic. Takes on a lot of physical and emotional abuse. Basically everyone in this movie is an asshole. Lucky I didn't pay for the ticket as I used the free coupon code from Fandango.com that was sent out.

I walked out when he was descending into some kind of madness and started looking through trash, looking at dirty rats as food and eating birds eggs. And then he beat the shit out of one of the asshole surfers. I couldn't take it anymore.

Wow, I enjoyed it, plus the big twist at the end was really good and pulled all of that chaos together. The Q&A after the movie was a lot of fun

I thought the movie rocked. I did not like the director's film: Vivarium.
