The Thursday Murder Club (2025, D: Columbus) -- S: Mirren, Brosnan, Kingsley -- Netflix

Retirement homes are supposed to be for, well, retirement. But rest, relaxation, and pinochle aren’t in the cards for one set of seniors. This group of unlikely sleuths has uncovered a murder case, and they’re willing to risk their lives to solve it. They’re The Thursday Murder Club, and they’re coming to Netflix in a new movie. Based on the bestselling novel by Richard Osman, this is a whodunit with teeth — false ones, of course. The cast of The Thursday Murder Club includes:
- Helen Mirren (The Queen, Gosford Park)
- Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye,The Out-Laws)
- Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi,The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More)
- Celia Imrie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,The Diplomat)
- David Tennant (Doctor Who, Inside Man)
- Daniel Mays (Atonement,Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget)
- Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker)
- Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes,The Crown)
- Henry Lloyd-Hughes (Anna Karenina, Chevalier)
- Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Withnail and I)
- Tom Ellis (Lucifer,Players)
- Geoff Bell (RocknRolla, Kingsman: The Secret Service)
- Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hot Fuzz)
- Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso,The Sandman)
- Ingrid Oliver (Doctor Who; Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging)
This wrapped filming last Fall. Will drop on Netflix this year.

(Which also explains Mirren holding the novel. Also, if I remember right, he's likely sitting down because he's about 7ft tall.)

Osman, 2022

Columbus, 2012

Will drop on Netflix August 28th. I saw an early screening for this in February. Can't say anything yet because the review embargo hasn't dropped yet and I signed an NDA. I'll say more when a trailer drops.

I did the same thing with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. They let me screen it many months before it came out.

Wasn't aware of this movie (or the books). Chanced upon the trailer yesterday. Looks good. I guess I won't cancel my subscription just yet. Well played, Netflix.

Comes out August 28th
I saw this movie back in February.
I'll just share a few short thoughts. It's a fun old school style murder mystery with some good performances. Mirren's character is the lead. And Brosnan appears the 2nd most. A lot of Brosnan's interactions are with Tom Ellis, who plays his son.
Everyone plays off each other really well. Kind of has the old school whodunnit vibe.
If you're a fan of any of these actors, especially Mirren, it's worth a watch.

I've seen a couple of focus group preview screenings recently that ended up on streaming. I assume they made very few changes because this was a quick turn around from when I saw that email. Compared to Worth the Wait (which was rough when I saw it) that took nearly a year to be dumped on Tubi.

Reminder, this movie drops tomorrow morning at 3am ET. I already shared some thoughts when I saw it months ago.
Like I said, if you like "old school" murder mysteries, you'll likely enjoy this.

Watched this tonight and loved it. It was so great, I feel it should have been released in theaters. Unlike most Netflix movies that deserve streaming only. Based on a book that was extremely popular in England, it spawned 4 follow-ups. This would have been a huge box-office hit in the U.K. I'd give it a 9/10. It was one of the most entertaining films of the year. Both Helen Mirren and Celia Imrie stole this move.
