Freaky Tales (2025, W/D: Ryan Fleck, Anna Boden) S: Pascal, Mendelsohn, Hanks

Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.
Executive produced by hip-hop pioneer Too $hort, and featuring an all-star ensemble including Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks, this pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humor, gory kills, and sly twists and turns makes for one wild ride.

Fleck and Boden co-directed Captain Marvel. I knew their names sounded familiar. I’m always game for an 80s movie.

It’s nice to see Pedro Pascal finally getting some work.

Just saw this and loved it. So very 80s.I had gone to shows at Gilman in the last 80s so it was amazing to see it in the movie.

Nobody wants to play sports in Oakland but nice to see the town is getting recognized in cinema.
Blindspotting the other movie set in Oakland a couple of years ago.

Sorry to Bother You was the big Oakland movie for me.
There was a movie called Slice that has a similar feel. It didn’t really pull me in. But it’s worth watching for a handful of good moments.

Saw this earlier this evening.
Even though the film's overall narrative didn't fully click, it's still an entertaining (clear) love letter to the Bay Area.
Having moved out to Northern California from the Midwest in 1999, it was wonderful to see so many familiar places on-screen.
It's chock-full of fun cameos, especially from Bay Area Musicians, old & new, across a multitude of genres.
I also loved how absolutely gory the film became at times.
Unfortunately, the Gilman St. portrayed in the film is not the actual location, which would make sense considering Gilman's historic dealings with corporations.
The filmmakers still got the overall vibe of Gilman St. relatively correct, including the bi-monthly meetings.
That particular story in the anthology is based on an actual event that had happened during Gilman St.'s early days dealing with Nazis in the East Bay.
My former Radio Station Manager was part of the attendees that (finally) fought back against the Nazis that evening, which is documented in a wonderful documentary called Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk (2017).

Corbett, who made Turn It Around (my band just played with his (Bobby Joe Ebola) back in Feb) was a tech consultant on the film. He's on the stairs at the Coliseum near the end of the scenes at the start and end of the film.
If that wasn't filmed in Gilman, it fooled me. I thought I saw painted sheets on the wall which I figured were to cover up current graffiti with 'historically accurate" graffiti. I did think that the area where the basketball hoop was looked a lot bigger than I remembered it.

KALX? Were they in the real event or in the scene in the movie? or both?

I was at Gilman a few weeks back for a show. The (actual) area near the basketball hoop has a door for one of bathrooms, which is missing in the film.
As I mentioned, even though there are clear differences, the filmmakers did solid work echoing the overall vibe at Gilman.

This was worth a watch. It’s not what I expected. I thought it was going to have more fantasy elements.
So without researching this… are these fictionalized accounts of true stories?

The rest of the segments cull from Bay Area Artists (second segment is based around Too Short & Danger Zone), nightlife and culture (Game 4 of the 1987 NBA Playoffs).

This movie was a blast, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a retro movie with over the top violence. My least favorite though was Chapter #2. It wasn't bad, just not as fun or exciting as Chapters 1, 3, and 4. 8/10 rating overall.

It's not in the theaters anymore in my area. Got a very limited run.
I see it's on Fandango at Home for a $9.99 rental or $14.99 to buy. Maybe I'll splurge for a rental.

I rented this on VOD and just finished it. I don’t know if it worked for me. I liked the setting and music, but I thought the 4 chapters didn’t really gel together. The rappers was probably the least interesting story. The only story that I found compelling was Pascal’s story. And the mixture of supernatural elements I thought was weird. The cameo by Tom Hanks felt off as well.
I know I’m probably in the minority on this one.

^Thanks. I'll check it this weekend. What caught my attention about this movie is that there's a youtuber who called this one of his worst movies of the year. Saying that people "Like me" are the enemy in it. So now I'm curious if there are other baddies in this movie other than Nazis(!)

^Nah, he even quotes Too Short and says he was always a fan of his. But, after just re-watching the vid, he says, "If you look like me [white guy], this movie hates you".

Friends don't let friends get trapped in the psychosis of Content Creators. It's just a movie. And it doesn't hate white people. The Nazis are the bad guys in a couple segments. FYI, it's directed by the Little Miss Sunshine couple.
Movie was good. But it didn't really grab and pull me in. It was more entertaining to watch for its creativity in adapting these true stories.

It was not bad.
Marshawn Lynch appeared briefly as the bus driver.
Looks like there will not be a 4k release and just Blu-ray
Man I wish I could have bubble gum ice cream from Loards again but they closed their Fremont store decades ago and San Leandro is too far to travel and nice to have a Stevie B flashback.
I remember this song at the end was also used in a Miami Vice episode.

Yeah, I liked it quite a bit. Weird to say the movie "doesn't like white people" when one of the first protagonists is white and antagonists (even if they aren't "villains") in other segments are Black and Latino.

Watched this on a plane a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. Loved the “old VHS” aspects too - pretty fun flick!

I had fun with it. But man, what a loss it is to no longer have Angus Cloud around. I absolutely loved the way he delivered dialogue.
