I'll be very surprised (and disappointed) if it's related to Night Country.

Even if they were sure that Liz Danvers would be back, they wouldn't announce it until after the next Emmy Awards because it would mean the difference between Foster competing in Best Actress in a TV Movie or Limited Series, or the much more competitive Best Actress in a Dramatic Series category.

I'm fine with Issa being the showrunner but she should source the writing/script to someone else. She did a good job behind the camera - I felt this season was well directed and created a unique atmosphere. Where it missed the mark was on the plot and storytelling.

Re: True Detective - Season 5
We are not in Alaska anymore. The upcoming fifth season of HBO‘s Emmy-winning crime anthology series True Detective — and the second with Issa Lopez as writer/showrunner — is moving along. It also is moving to another state, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi told Deadline during an interview at The White Lotus Season 3 premiere while discussing the network’s upcoming slate.
“It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,” Orsi said. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
Filming on the new season is slated to begin in the coming months, with casting in preliminary stages.
“I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited,” Orsi said. “We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”
The new season is rumored to have three leads, two male and one female. It will launch in 2027, Orsi said.
True Detective: Night Country, the fourth installment in the anthology, starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives who dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice in order to solve the disappearance of the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. Foster won an Emmy for her work on the show.
Lopez told the New York Post in December that “there’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season]. That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything.”

So it'll premiere in 2026, which means her werewolf project with GDT will not be happening first. I guess after the Emmy wins HBO gave her a lot of money and fast tracked S5.

Nicolas Cage is nearing a deal to star in “True Detective” Season 5 at HBO, Variety has learned from sources.
Details are being kept under tight wraps on the new season, but it was revealed earlier this year that Season 5 will be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City.
Cage would be the latest high-profile star to take on a leading role in “True Detective.” Leads of past seasons include Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster. Harrelson, McConaughey, Ali, and Foster all earned Emmy nominations for their respective seasons, while Foster won both an Emmy and Golden Globe Award for her work in Season 4.
