Handling the Undead (2024, D: Hvistendahl) -- based on a Lindqvist (author of Let the Right One In) novel

SynopsisOn a hot summer day in Oslo, the dead mysteriously awaken, and three families are thrown into chaos when their deceased loved ones come back to them. Who are they, and what do they want? A family is faced with the mother's reawakening before they have even mourned her death after a car accident; an elderly woman gets the love of her life back the same day she has buried her; a grandfather rescues his grandchild from the gravesite in a desperate attempt to get his daughter out of her depression. Handling the Undead is a drama with elements of horror about three families, a story about grief and loss, but also about hope and understanding of what we can't comprehend or control.

Based on a novel by the author of Let the Right One In (Swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist, who also has a writer's credit on the film), Handling the Dead tells the stories of three families coping not just with the loss of loved ones, but also with their mysterious return.
The Wikipedia synopsis for the novel states "The plot focuses on the reactions of society and the many conflicts that arise between Swedish authorities and the relatives of the undead; the horror is less in the uncanny animation of corpses but in the realities of grief, loss and our own inevitable mortality." My mind went to Shin Godzilla for zombie movies!
The acting is very well done.
The make-up effects are downright disturbing in their subtle realism. In particular, the kid is just creepy AF. That said, there is very little horror beyond the general uneasy feeling, a couple of cheap jump scares, and a scene of animal cruelty that tortures the audience.
I didn't expect the movie could fulfill the promise of the book's premise, but it seemed to have shunned it altogether. The story only focuses on the family dramas, not on the impact to society. This could also be a good approach, except the film never even reaches "slow burn" status. It is a warm feeling with no ignition source. The film is very well made, but it never connects with the message it is wanting to deliver. If you enjoy foreign slow burn "horror/drama", you could definitely do worse, but this isn't going to set your world on fire.

Thanks for posting. I’ll make this a priority.
There is so much garbage on streaming it buries the good stuff.

I saw this last year during Sundance. I was really looking forward to it for Renate, but it is super slow.
