Any idea what it's about?

Here is a JP teaser. I'm not sure much is known about this. I know some people are not going to like this CG animation style.

CG animation doesn't bother me at all, this looks intriguing.

Note: North American theatrical release is pushed to early 2026 (possibly February6)

I saw a trailer for this when I went to see Predator: Badlands. It was weird because, although occasional on-screen text was in English, all the dialogue was in Japanese sans subtitles. I was left with no clue what the hell it was even about.

The movie is suppose to be a spin on Shakespeare's Hamlet.

The reviews haven't been great so far. ANN didn't like it. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/rev...e-film/.228731. It's very poorly rated on Filmarks (JP) - 2.8 / 5 https://filmarks.com/movies/120337. It's looking like it won't do great with the Japan box office (it opened this weekend).

Bad start in Japan. Reviews and social media in Japan haven't been kind to the film. I guess even with Mamoru Hosoda, it doesn't automatically equate to a good anime film.

I've heard he'll have to make a commercial success for his next project or he'll be unlikely to get carte blanche funding again.

That wouldn't surprise me.

Future project needs to improve on subpar animation and writing. His earlier films are usually considered the better ones (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children). Those 3 films were written by Satoko Okudera. She is also the screenwriter for Kokuho live-action film and is very well received (theatrical release by GKIDS in 2026).

Estimated box office gross is $260,000 (160 theaters - should be all IMAX). It will be only standard screenings next weekend. I don't expect the box office gross to change too drastically.


I saw this over the weekend. I got used to the animation style as the movie went on. However it doesn't live up to the animation standards from Hosoda's previous films. The story for the most part isn't that interesting and felt off in many parts. I didn't care for the main male character as well. The movie felt way to long (approaching 2 hours).

I wonder how much money they lost on this (both Japan and here). The production committee is huge as well (Dentsu Inc., East Japan Marketing & Communications, Inc., Hakuhodo Inc., Kadokawa, LAWSON, MOVIC, Nippon Television Network, Sony Pictures, Studio Chizu, The Yomiuri Shimbun, TOHO, YTV).

I hope Hosoda's next project is much better than this.
