Lee Cronin's The Mummy (2026, D: Cronin) -- from Blumhouse/Atomic Monster
Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the newly converged horror producers, will unwrap yet another iconic movie monster. “The Mummy” is coming from Lee Cronin, director of the campy and cult-approved “Evil Dead Rise.”
Cronin will write and direct the project, which has been dated for April 17, 2026, by New Line Cinema.
“This will be unlike any ‘Mummy’ movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,” Cronin said in a statement.
The director’s label Doppelgängers will also serve as a producer, alongside James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster will co-finance. Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Macdara Kelleher are executive producers. Alayna Glasthal is the executive overseeing the project for Atomic Monster
Blumhouse has had good luck updating the classic horror figures from the Universal film library (most of them distributed by that studio). This includes Elizabeth Moss’ sleeper hit “Invisible Man” and an upcoming take on “Wolfman” from director Lee Whannell and star Christopher Abbott.
As intellectual property, “The Mummy” spawned a late-90s film franchise starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and, in a sequel, an upstart Dwayne Johnson. In 2017, Tom Cruise took an ill-fated stab at a reboot alongside Sofia Boutella and Russell Crowe.
“Evil Dead Rise,” also a New Line release, grossed nearly $150 million on a reported $12 million budget. Cronin is represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein.

Given their approach to Invisible Man and Wolf Man, the Mummy will probably be somebody undergoing extreme plastic surgery who goes on a killing spree while still in the bandages.

I had a great time with Evil Dead Rise. So I am cautiously optimistic.

Is this a first? Three movies with the same title in the last 30 years?

I'll check it out.
Too bad Cruise's movie didn't take off. The Dracula one was really good. I watched it for the first time a few months ago.
We'll always have Monster Squad.

That is creepy as hell, but feels like he's doing another Evil Dead remake. Is there an actual mummy in this or is it a new interpretation of how the "curse" works?
And it also feels a little unfortunately topical.

I was kind of hoping for an actual scary new take on the classic Universal or Hammer Mummy films.
Truth be told, the original Karloff one rarely gets a rewatch from me. I just feel like it’s the weakest of the Universal monster debuts.
Can anyone recommend an actual good mummy film that would fall into the horror category?
There’s one I saw as a child that I’ve been searching for ever since. I don’t remember much at all anymore except that it was present day and a black actor was one of the leads. Also tons of green. I remember fog or something to that effect.
It’s not the one with Lou Gosset Jr and I really don’t think it’s Time Walker with Austin Stoker.

Totally envy you. I always wanted to meet Bruce Campbell. He seems like a cool guy. I really wanna see his new movie, Ernie & Emma.
As for the movie you are trying the recall, the green fog does bring up vague memories, but I'm not sure...

The one from 1999 with Brendan Fraser is a fun one, not super heavy on the horror but it's a fun watch and apparently caused a lot of young people to experience their bisexual awakening due to Fraser and Rachel Weisz being so good looking.

It’s funny because I can certainly know I watched a handful of scary Egyptian Mummy movies over the years but I can’t remember a single one.
This movie just looks like more Evil Dead type stuff with some mummy’s tomb stuff thrown in as an afterthought. Meh.

this just looks like some generic horror story with a scary girl. doesn't look like anything Mummy related. just another dime store Conjuring or something.
