Saw him many times back in the day, put on one hell of a show....Wish him good health
After 50 years of rousing, rock-and-soul performances, Southside Johnny Lyonhas officially retired from touring, according to an announcement sent by the Basie Center for the Arts Friday.
With this retirement, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes’ upcoming Dec. 31 performance at the Red Bank venue is canceled. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.
Lyon, 76, of Neptune, has retired to “manage ongoing health issues,” the announcement said.
It is unclear whether the band, best known for their oversized “Jersey Sound” — honed in Asbury Park in the early ‘70s — and the bar-room party anthem “I Don’t Want to Go Home,” will continue to record new music, or will play any future local shows.
The Jukes’ last album was 2015′s “Soultime!”
The news comes as a major blow to the Jersey Shore live entertainment scene, as the band have been mainstays at popular venues like The Stone Pony for half a century, often playing around Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.
