Death of a Unicorn (A24) (2025, D: Scharfman) S: Ortega, Rudd, Poulter, Grant, Leoni
Death of a Unicorn stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. But the talent doesn’t stop there. Not only is the dark comedy produced by Ari Aster, but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorn, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”

New trailer that emphasizes the horror elements more than the comedy

Nope . . . not going to watch any trailers. The batshit crazy concept is enough; I'm in.

You might be out now.
Reviews are largely, and uncharacteristically for A24, mediocre for this one
Currently just a 60 on Metacritic

Still in. 60 for an A24 is like an 80 for anybody else.

Surprisingly, despite Jenna Ortega, my kids saw the trailer in front of Novocaine and they don't want to see this. I was surprised.

Just saw this one. Pretty let down but Rudd and Ortega were good. Getting tired of the rich people caricature portrayal. It just had too much going on and no real focus.

I have my free A24 ticket for this weekend so I'll probably check it out

I'm seeing it this afternoon with the free A24 ticket. Going to a Regal that's super close to me as opposed to AMC.

Just got out of seeing it. It was pretty entertaining. Funny and gory. Definitely had a dark sense of humor.
(I see it's gotten very mixed reaction)
An unrelated note: I bought a small popcorn at Regal and they put it in a Mufasa steel popcorn bucket. It was only $5.
I think Regal has a ton of those left over and just wants to get rid of them.

In my experience with successful businesspeople, not caricatures at all. I've heard some of the dialogue word-for-word

Anthony Carrigan and Richard Grant were the highlights for me. Didn't enjoy it much for the reasons already mentioned.

I definitely think some movies run into the problem of making villains so detestable that the movie simply cannot deliver a fate that feels satisfactory. Like that whole family needed to go slow and painful

It was a fun enough romp for a few hours . . . not something that will stick with me. I am VERY glad I didn't watch any trailers or read anything though. It was already very surface level, so to have that scratched away would have been disastrous.
This felt like somebody grabbed one of those public domain horror movie scripts and polished it up to a moderately presentable level. Pick a lane and lean into it. This was so back and forth across genres that it didn't gain any real traction.
Paul Rudd needed to die, not be redeemed.
I thought I recognized Sunita Mani, then just chalked her up as an "awkward lowkey hottie." Looked her up . . . Save Yourselves!

Still, I liked this more than most here. I liked the tone of the movie, and was kept engaged the entire length. I'm not a Paul Rudd fan (only see him in two or three movies), but I was thoroughly amused by him in this. He was doing a great part-pathetic, part-oblivious guy. Reminded me a bit of my uncle.
I remember Sunita Mani from the TV show GLOW, and here she's a great example of a performer being one of the most memorable characters even though that character hardly does anything.
