Your Best Of & Favorite movies of 2024
Pretty obvious that most in this forum hate or refuse to participate in Worst of lists
Or most of you are terrible remembering what you watched that sucked.
Okay, so let's do a Best of/Favorites lists. And you don't have to relegate this to stuffy "Prestige" movies.
Remember, these are movies released in the 2024 calendar year, not movies you saw for the 1st time in 2024.
Again, all opinions here are subjective.
If your memory sucks, here is a list of everything by month that came out in 2024
https://www.firstshowing.net/schedule2024/
My List:
Dune Part 2
Civil War
Bad Boys: Ride or Die - Just a fun summer movie.
Challengers - This is definitely not for everyone, but I really liked how different it was as a sports movie.
Inside Out 2
A Quiet Place Day 1: Good prequel
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F - Just a fun return to these characters
Deadpool and Wolverine
Transformers One - Not many saw this, but this was by far one of the best if not the best of the Transformers movies
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve story - A really well done and heartbreaking documentary
The Wild Robot - A really well done animated movie that didn't get much chatter
Amber Alert - Pretty suspenseful movie about a kidnapping
Saturday Night
Smile 2 - Normally I would not put a horror movie in my favorites, but Naomi Scott was so good in this.
Juror #2 - An excellent 90s style courtroom thriller

Just from the stuff that I've actually seen in theaters in no particular order:
Furiosa
Dune Pt. 2
Alien: Romulous
Rebel Moon Parts I & II Director's Cuts
Horizon
Quiet Place 3
Longlegs
Werewolves
I'm sure there are and will be more. I know Nosferatu will be there - that one is just a given.

I haven't seen enough new movies to really have a list but I would like to mention Riddle of Fire. It had a limited theatrical and festival run last Spring but it's worth watching if you haven't seen it. Vinegar Syndrome released the bluray and it's available digitally as well.

2024 Top Tens?
Did the "Rank 'em as you see 'em" thread supplant this tradition?
Here are my ten best of 2024:
#1 and #2 are interchangeable: Thelma / Civil War
3: Godzilla Minus One
4: Furiosa
5.Prey
6. Dune: Part Two
7. Late Night With the Devil
8. Hundreds of Beavers
9. The first act of Heretic
10. Rebel Ridge (right up to the ending)
Edit: I clumsily pulled Prey from the list of releases, not realizing it was a different movie. Slide everything up one, and choose any one of my alternates! And I goofed Godzilla Minus One (saw the November re-release on the schedule) . . . I suck at this. I was smart enough (but disappointed) to leave off Zone of Interest as I knew that was technically a 2023 that I could not see until 2024.
Runners up:
The First Omen (hearing the filmmakers talk about this on a podcast elevated my opinion of it)
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Nosferatu
Abigail (this was so much fun, but would have been NEXT LEVEL had the trailers not given away the premise)
Missed and want to see:Saturday Night, Cuckoo, Anora, The Brutalist, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin
Most disappointing: Alien Romulus

Re: Your Best Of & Favorite movies of 2024
While there were plenty movies I liked in 2024, this was a down year for me overall. Not a lot of upper tier favorites, although there are a few biggies like The Brutalist and Nosferatu that I have yet to see. Here's the list as it stands now. It's mostly in order, but after the first 3 or 4, it all gets a little blurry. Some of these are technically 2023 films, but didn't get a wide release until 2024.
1. Anora
2. Evil Does Not Exist
3. Red Rooms
4. Rebel Ridge
5. Strange Darling
6. Dune: Part Two
7. Civil War
8. The Bikeriders
9. Hit Man
10. Juror #2
I also want to give a shout out to The Beekeeper and Trap. "Junk cinema" at it's best. I have a hard time relating to anyone who can't have fun with these (which I guess is most of the members here?). Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger was another personal highlight. It's not much more than Martin Scorsese talking for 2+ hours about how much he loves P&P, but as someone who loves both P&P and listening to Scorsese talk about movies, it was right in my wheelhouse.

Re: 2024 Top Tens?
Ahh . . . snap. I was going through the list of releases for the year and pulled the title out. I thought "I could have sworn that was a few years ago, but time is funny anymore."
It is the Predator movie . . . I will update. Thank you for the catch!
(Thank you to the mod who merged this and pointed me in the right direction!)
I'm not seeing Godzilla Minus One popping up on anybody else's lists . . . did I screw that one up, too? Edit: I did. I saw it in December of 2023.
