Cleaner (2025, D: Martin Campbell) — S: Daisy Ridley, Clive Owen

“Set in present-day London, a group of radical activists take over an energy company’s annual gala, seizing 300 hostages in order to expose the corruption of the hosts,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Their just cause is hijacked by an extremist within their ranks, who is ready to murder everyone in the building to send his anarchic message to the world. It falls to an ex-soldier turned window cleaner, played by Ridley, suspended 50 stories up on the outside of the building, to save those trapped inside, including her younger brother.”
Opens February 21, 2025

Looks like a Die Hard remake. I like Ridley so I’ll give it a watch but the plot point that she’s a window cleaner is silly. I just hope they don’t explain that she was “a cleaner” before she became a cleaner. *wink wink*

Jason Statham would be so jealous on missing out on the role.

Wonder how many deaths by squeegee we'll see.

I'm in because Martin Campbell is one of the few directors who can make this type of movie feel serious and thrilling.

Look like Die Hard with a female lead.

His run of films since 2017 – THE FOREIGNER, THE PROTEGE and MEMORY – were all very decent second-tier action thrillers (kinda like top shelf DTV/streaming pictures) because of his long history in the genre and his commitment to sticking to what he does best, even into his 80’s. His IMDb filmography lists another film in pre-production (read: may or may not happen) called DEDICATION, also with Ridley. These films aren’t classics, but they’re all produced with decent budgets and a serious, sometimes politically topical approach. He’s actually got another one supposedly ‘opening’ this month called DIRTY ANGELS which looks to be in the same wheelhouse. It’s Lionsgate but no Big Names so I suspect it will play mostly on streaming and disc eventually.

No one can criticize Hollywood for not being eco-friendly - they recycle more than anyone.

Is there some kind of mandate that Daisy Ridley only plays girl boss roles?

Opens Friday. Currently 56% on RT

Richard Roeper actually gave it a positive review. Same goes with Brian O on Blu-Ray.com and he's a super tough critic.

Brian O used to be here I believe. I wouldn't say he is "super tough" more than he is wildly inconsistent in how he reviews things. I put very little faith in any of his reviews...

I don’t really have a lot to say about this movie. So I’ll keep my thoughts short. Didn’t really like it. Get a C and maybe 2 out of 5 stars. Some of the action and hand to hand fight scenes were decent. But, this felt like Die Hard light. Really light. Story is kind of silly. And I found the villains lame. Daisy Ridley isn’t even that likable a character that you want to root for. Probably one of my least favorite of this genre.

It was definitely a fun B movie for me.

If you have access to Kanopy, the free library streaming service, this is available to watch on there.

Re: Cleaner (2025, D: Martin Campbell) — S: Daisy Ridley, Clive Owen

Yesterday was an off day so, on a whim, looked at what movies were new on Kanopy. I didn't want a long movie and this was 1 hr 40 mins so gave it a watch even though the description made it sound like a Die Hard ripoff.
You could make a fun drinking game if you take a drink every time Daisy says the word "fuck."

Re: Cleaner (2025, D: Martin Campbell) — S: Daisy Ridley, Clive Owen

I thought it was a decent action DTV, even if Ridley is not directly involved for a lot of it, and it's basically Die Hard on a Window-Cleaning Platform. I didn't feel I had wasted my time.

This might make me a terrible person, but I'm mixed on whether autistic characters in movies are praise-worthy human representation or an artificial plot device to introduce chaos and obstacles.

I did like how they
Spoiler:
Steven Seagal-ed Clive Owen.

This was boring and generic.

Magpie was better than this.

I think I stand by this as my review. It was fine but generic and cliche and the main characters weren't all that compelling. 2/5, I'm afraid.
