The Sylvester Stallone appreciation thread -- News and reflections
There isn't a general Sly appreciation thread here, so I'm starting on. You can talk about whatever you want with him. After all, he's been working for about 50+ years.
Also, it's a waste of time IMO to make threads for all the small indie movies that Sly is making these days when he's not doing Tulsa King. And be honest, most of you won't watch them or seek them out. These Lionsgate movies don't come to Netflix or Max. They usually just go to VOD and then maybe Starz.
So here is the newest one. Coming to VOD January 17th.
If there is news of a project like Tulsa King that is worthwhile of starting a separate thread, then we can do that.
I suppose we can merge his last VOD movie Armor in here.

Academy Award® nominee* Sylvester Stallone, Scott Eastwood, Mike Colter, and Willa Fitzgerald star in this explosive action-thriller about two married spies caught in the crosshairs of an international intelligence network that will stop at nothing to obtain a critical asset. Joe (Eastwood) and Lara (Fitzgerald) are agents living off the grid whose quiet retreat at a winter resort is blown to shreds when members of the old guard suspect the two may have joined an elite team of rogue spies, known as ALARUM.

Lots of cool films but his hubris is terrible. Once the Rocky floodgates opened up, he became an unconscionable ballbreaker.
Old age hasn't slowed him down either. I am a fan, though.

Not gonna lie, I genuinely enjoy Oscar.

Rocky is one of the greatest films of all time. Copland is also a masterpiece and I still think Stallone deserved the best actor Oscar for it. I enjoy all of the other Rocky films and others here and there. From what little I know about his personal life I doubt he is someone I would want to be friends with.

I'm happy I'll have the Arrow 4k of Demolition Man soon. I haven't watched it since the days of VHS.

I bought the Rocky 6 movie 4K set a few weeks ago. Supposedly he was working on a director's cut of Rocky V, but that never happened. I guess he scrapped it due to his conflict with Irwin Winkler.
There is a longer cut of Rocky Balboa in the set. Was that ever released before?

As far as I know, the director's cut of Rocky Balboa is new, consisting of most of the deleted scenes from the previous BD release.
EDIT: Beat me to it.

He makes some very entertaining movies. He's made some turkeys too. He has the type of screen presence that I'll check out (for free) something just because he's in it. There are only two movies I like enough to own, First Blood and Cliffhanger.

Never understood why he never made it as a dramatic actor. Instead just star vehicles over and over and over. He could have had a much better career.

Re: The Sylvester Stallone appreciation thread -- News and reflections
I have always been a fan of Sly, especially the Rocky franchise. I've watched those with my grandpa. Starting with Rocky, I own almost all of his movies on DVD or Blu-ray, Rhinestone, Stop ! Or my Mom Will Shoot, Avenging Angelo (sold it years ago) and Shade are not part of my collection and of course the geezer teasers aren't either.
I was really happy with his 2006 comeback. Rocky Balboa, Rambo and The Expendables did all play to his strengths and I always thought he should have written and directed more. Seeing him again as Rocky in Creed a couple of years later was my highlight of that year.
I think it was a mistake to not include him in Creed III. I do get the notion that it's Jordan's franchise and Adonis' story, but it was the worst of the three movies and I think Rocky could have helped, although Stallone might be a difficult guy to work with.
15 years ago I wrote in another movie forum, that Stallone should do something like Get Carter as a TV series, so I was out of my mind when Tulsa King was announced. It is really the perfect fit for the actor and persona that is Sylvester Stallone.

RB is arguably his best acting performance and CH is his best action movie, and I’ll die on that hill!

I believe I have only seen Cliffhanger once so I need to revisit it. Rocky Balboa... Rocky V left such a bad taste I never watched RB... it's on my holiday list now.

Rocky V was so bad Stallone HAD to make Rocky Balboa! He couldn’t leave that shit heap as the final Rocky movie. Rocky Balboa redeems the character after the putrid Rocky V, and basically ignores that it ever happened.

His 20 day Q&A on Aintitcool from 2006 was great. He answered 200 fan submitted questions and it was really insightful. The formatting sucks and AICN is irrelevant today, but here’s one of them:

Other than Rocky and Rambo his career outside those movies in the 21st century are not that remarkable.

I like Rocky Balboa, but I think Creed is an even better redemption for the character.
