‘BEATLES ’64’: BEATLEMANIA HITS AMERICA IN NEW TRAILER FOR DISNEY+ DOCUMENTARY
Martin Scorsese-produced film, featuring newly discovered Maysles brothers footage and new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, out Nov. 29The period when Beatlemania reached America for the first time is captured in a new Disney+ documentary produced by Martin Scorsese.
Beatles ’64, arriving on the streaming service on Nov. 29, features never-before-seen footage of the Beatles as they arrived in America to unprecedented fanfare in February 1964, as well as new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
“It was like being in the eye of a hurricane,” John Lennon says of Beatlemania in an archival interview featured in the trailer. “It was happening to us, but it was hard to see.”
George Harrison adds, “We were kinda normal, and the rest of the world was crazy. Everybody got into the mania when the Beatles came to town.”
“From the instant they landed at Kennedy Airport, met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country,” Disney+ said of the documentary. “Their thrilling debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show captivated more than 73 million viewers, the most watched television event of its time. Beatles ’64 presents the spectacle but also tells a more intimate behind-the-scenes story, capturing the camaraderie of John, Paul, George, and Ringo as they experienced unimaginable fame.”
Beatles ’64 includes newly discovered footage of the Fab Four as filmed by the legendary documentarian duo Albert and David Maysles, as well as concert footage from their first U.S. gig in Washington, D.C. Peter Jackson’s WingNut Studios, which also remastered the footage seen in the Beatles doc Get Back.
The documentary was directed by David Tedeschi and produced by Martin Scorsese, Margaret Bodde, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, Sean Ono Lennon, Jonathan Clyde, and Mikaela Beardsley, with Jeff Jones and Rick Yorn serving as executive producers.

Beatles 64

I'm hoping there are enough Beatles fans for this to deserve its own thread. The Maysles footage is fascinating, as it always is. As one of the millions who watched the Ed Sullivan show the tie-in to the Kennedy assassination is bunk, they were just our older brothers having fun. I could do without the talking heads, except for Ronnie Spector and Smokey Robinson of course. So basically 45 minutes of great footage stretched to 90 minutes.
On a somewhat related note I had the privilege to see Ronnie Spector from the 7th row of a 750 seat theater in 2019. What an amazing voice.

It was ok, but I agree, too much talking heads (and yeah, they lean too far into the Kennedy assassination stuff, which is a stretch. IMO, I wasn't there at the time) and not enough Maysles footage. I'd like to see Disney+ release a cleaned up version of the Maysles' 1991 "The Beatles: The First US Visit". Much more of the filmmaker's footage including more complete live Sullivan and Washington Coliseum performances, fascinating stuff!

I'm glad they included the Peppermint Lounge footage (Club where The Beatles went to after the Sullivan taping) There's a recent interview with Geri Miller (Ronette-lookalike dancer who had fun with Ringo) over at The Rialto Report. It's a wild read, to say the least. The site also has the write-up/interview as an mp3, complete with great tracks playing in the background.

I like The Beatles but for some reason I haven’t had much interest in the recent documentaries about them. Maybe one day I’ll watch this and Get Back.

Yeah, I haven't watched those other documentaries yet, either. I do have the Beatles Anthology on dvd and it's very good ...

I'll have to watch those other ones someday, too.
