Yes or No…is American Pie (1999) a modern day classic?
I think so. So much has come from this one little movie that I’m sure no one expected to be a genuine comedy gem. But, is it up there with the classics of old? Can you even compare American Pie to Charlie Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy?
So much imo has come from this one movie. AP is the staple by which all other comedies in the 21st century owe so much to. MiLF for instance, the pie scene. These are bonafide staples in modern day society. Even today, 25 years later this movie has got to be the ultimate, buddy sex comedy. I think it’s a classic, however you may take it.

I think I need to know what besides Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy are considered "classics" first (I assume we are only comparing it to other comedy movies). It stands out to me largely because it's a throwback to 80s teen sex comedies but I'm not sure I'd say it's made any kind of impact on my life or anything, or something that I watch over and over again.
Now from that same year, Office Space, is a classic. Galaxy Quest too, probably Election.

I tried watching American Pie with my wife. We got about a half hour into it when we both looked at each other and asked if the other wanted to continue. Neither one of us did. We both HATED it. It was awful. So we turned it off and put in an actual good movie.
A modern day classic? No, it's a modern day crapfest. Terrible movie.
Oh, hell yeah! Office Space is a great movie. Timeless, even with technology and pop culture changing.

It's a piece of shit movie. Barely funny.
The second-best Mena Suvari film of 1999 with "American" in the title.

I love the film and it is classic to me... but in reading the OP there is no way I could vote anything other than "What, are you high?"

It’s a C+ comedy that a very specific age group has some fondness for but no more so than 30 better comedies.

It's alright. Overrated but passable. No classic by any means except that it was released 25 years ago.
"And this one time in band camp..."
Ok, that is still a classic line.

It was derived from various 80s movies about young men needed to get their first lay. No.

We watched it once, once it was available for rental. There were a few chuckles but once it was over I forgot most of it except what's entered the cultural consciousness. I can't fathom that anyone would enjoy it nowadays.

It’s no more a “classic” than Revenge of the Nerds or Porky’s.
I was the exact demographic for American Pie when it was released and even I never cared for it all that much.

I loved it at the time it came out. It was one of the 1st DVDs I bought. But, I haven't watched it in at least 10 years.

Not even remotely close to a classic. It has not aged well IMO.

I love all the American Pie movies(minus Girls Rule) and seeing the original in theaters in the summer of 1999 was one of the most memorable moviegoing experiences of my life. It's a classic of its genre that barely exists anymore.

I bet this would get a better response if asked on "The Teen Sex Comedy Movie" forum (if there's such a thing).

It’s not even one of the best 50 or so movies from 1999. It was ‘of the time’ so to speak, but even as someone who loved it when it came out, today it has basically no rewatchability and I doubt teens today are itching to see this ‘classic’ raunchy comedy that nobody even really talks about anymore.

I voted "no" but have an odd question . . .
Could a movie have been a classic at one point, but lose that status. I believe there was a time when American Pie may have been considered a classic, but it does not seem to have held that staying power. Same goes for Revenge of the Nerd and Porkys. However, Fast Times at Ridgemont High , Breakfast Cub, and Dazed and Confused seem to have held.

I'd say it's a classic in a sense that it created a lot of imitators following its release.

It’s a 90s comedy classic. A teen movie classic. Not an all time classic by any means. I still find it really funny. Especially Eugene Levy.

The Jason Biggs/Shannon Elizabeth scene is cringey to watch now. I'll give Biggs credit he was good playing a dweeb virgin.

Like how Where's the Party Yaar was retitled Dude, Where's the Party to cash in on the Kutcher/Scott film

I tend to roll my eyes at people who say American Pie has aged horribly and my response is always you just kind of had to be in high school at the end of 90s to love the movie. On the flip side of that I hated Not Amother Teen Movie when it came out at the time but I think it's pretty beloved today.

If I recall there were two alternate pie scenes. One for the theatrical cut and one for the unrated cut. One scene has Jim on the counter grinding on top of the pie and the other scene is hi standing against the refrigerator rubbing the pie on his junk.
I wonder which one is the staple of modern day society?
