St. Elmo’s Fire -- sequel in development with original cast

Copied over from the BRATS thread.

EXCLUSIVE: Andrew McCarthy‘s Hulu documentary Brats has brought back memories of the coming-of-age film where the term “Brat Pack” was coined. Deadline can reveal that Sony is exploring the possibility of making a new version of St. Elmo’s Fire. This version would hinge on reuniting original cast members McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham.

The 1985 film that the late Joel Schumacher directed and co-wrote with Carl Kurlander, focused on that transitional period between college and the pressures of finding jobs and starting lives. It was a surprise summer hit with a hugely successful soundtrack. The follow-up would capture the characters as they’ve come out the other end of all that.

Movies get remade all the time, with concepts resuscitated and roles populated by younger actors, but to me this sounds a far more interesting way to reconnect with the original movie. Who doesn’t want to find out what happened in their lives? It is very early going, they don’t even have a script, and I don’t even know that the cast has been talked to yet, but it will be worth watching to see what happens.

As for the reticence McCarthy showed about the “Brat Pack” label, maybe a second wind will result for him. In an upcoming The Film That Lit My Fuse, Lowe had a pithy assessment of it all, saying that it was really like being identified as a member of the coolest kid club, and who wouldn’t want that?

Lowe does not seem to take himself too seriously, and importantly, still has his hair and youthful looks, to the point he’s arguably more handsome now than he was in the Brat Pack days. Maybe that helps the fact that he’s fine, continuing as a card-carrying member of that club as he stars in and is co-writer and co-creator of the series Unstable, which has Season 2 coming through Netflix.

Re: St. Elmo’s Fire -- sequel in development with original cast

Rob Lowe has a lot of ideas for the long-gestating St. Elmo's Fire sequel — and he's sharing them with costar Demi Moore.

The 9-1-1: Lone Star actor said that he's "on a text thread" with the Substance actress in an interview with Kelly Ripa on Let's Talk Off Camera. "She has a pseudonym that she goes by, which I can't say, because then it wouldn't be a pseudonym," Lowe said. "And we're very much in contact now because we are actively trying to do [the] St. Elmo's Fire sequel."

Lowe first discussed the possibility of a sequel to the 1985 coming of age hit in July, following the success of costar Andrew McCarthy's Brats documentary that reunited most of the original movie's cast, including Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Moore, and Lowe. Lowe said the sequel is currently "moving along," adding, "It's going a little more slowly than I would have liked. But that's a good thing because we're trying to find the right writer and the right story. But all of the actors, everybody is on board. Everybody is excited."

The Parks and Recreation star said that he thinks the original St. Elmo's Fire connected with audiences because of its honesty in depicting the perils of young adulthood. "It was a hit in its time because it spoke to where we all were in our lives," Lowe said. "Will we ever have the kind of deep friendships coming out of college and coming out of our early 20s? Will that last in our lives? Where are we headed now that we're really adults?"

Lowe hopes the St. Elmo's sequel will maintain that honest spirit. "I think now, the theme of St. Elmo's Fire today is that it's never too late for happiness," he said. "Our kids are out of school and maybe some of us have been divorced and maybe somebody has been falling ill — all the things that you deal with as you get to our ages, this is an opportunity to explore those themes with characters that people know and love. And I think as opposed to just a money run, let's just reboot it because people know the title of it. I actually think there's a lot to be said about why we're doing it. And I'm super excited about it. Hopefully we can pull it off."

It's kind of disturbing that a coming-of-age movie from my youth about a bunch of young people staring their careers and adult lives will likely have a sequel about those same characters (played by the same actors) looking at their retirements.

Now it's like Cocoon 3.

I can't imagine there's any audience for this other than the stars trying to recapture something from their youth. In the decades since I can't recall one conversation about or even mentioning this movie (outside Schumacher's obit) let along wanting a sequel.
