Love Hurts (2025, D: Eusebio) S: Ke Huy Quan

You can’t break up with your past.
#LoveHurtsMovie is in theaters February 7.
______
No matter how hard you try, you can’t break up with your past.
This Valentine’s Day, Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Loki) rockets into his first major leading man role as an unlikely hero, a seemingly mild-mannered realtor with a dark secret that he is desperate to leave behind. Spoiler alert: He won’t.
From 87North—producers of the groundbreaking action films Nobody, Violent Night, Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde and The Fall Guy—comes a visceral, high-octane story of wrath and revenge.
Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where ‘For Sale’ signs bloom. Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose; West Side Story, Argylle), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy.
Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu; Tomb Raider, Warcraft), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried.
The film features a killer soundtrack and impressive and diverse cast that includes former NFL running back and Super Bowl champion Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch (Bottoms, 80 for Brady), Mustafa Shakir (Emancipation, Luke Cage), Lio Tipton (Crazy, Stupid, Love., Lucy), Rhys Darby (Jumanji: The Next Level, Yes Man), André Eriksen (Violent Night, The Trip) and Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Perry Mason).
Produced by 87North’s Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, Love Hurts is written by Matthew Murray (Sheltered, CloudStreet: Soaring the American West) & Josh Stoddard (Warrior, Kaleidoscope) and Luke Passmore (Archenemy, Slaughterhouse Rulez). Guy Danella (Violent Night) is also producing. The executive producer is Ben Ormand.
Making his feature film directing debut on Love Hurts is acclaimed veteran stunt coordinator and fight coordinator JoJo Eusebio, whose credits include some of the greatest action films of the past decade including Black Panther, The Avengers, the John Wick films, The Matrix Resurrections, Violent Night, The Fall Guy and Deadpool 2. Eusebio also served as the second-unit director on Deadpool 2, Violent Night and Birds of Prey.

I’m happy to see Ke Huy Quan making a come back. Although this just looks like a variation of his character from Everything Everywhere All at Once, I’m down for it! It looks like a lot of fun.
Was the Marshawn Lynch?

Sure, this fits into the "John Wick clones" subgenre (yes, that is a thing) but I am totally down for this. It looks like a whole lot of fun.
For some reason, I thought that was Ronny Chieng playing Knuckles instead of Daniel Wu.

It seems apparent that Quan has the chops to play the comic/action roles that might’ve gone to Jackie Chan if Chan were about 15-20 years younger now. He’s a better actor, too, for my money. And since the latter looks every bit his 70 years now and has chosen to lazily crank out dumbed-down ‘family’ fare in Mainland China, I think it would be awesome for Quan to spend at least a few years in ‘lovable ass kicker’ roles in better-made, better-written U.S. action pictures like this one, even if they are in the Wick/Nobody mold.

It may suck but I haven't had a reason to go to the movies in months and this get me to go.

Yeah those reviews aren’t good. I’ll end up checking it out at some point if for no other reason than the Goonies (or Encino Man) reunion of Quan and Sean Astin.

I'd like if he, instead, did a remake of Jackie Chan's The Foriegner, but maybe in a different setting.

Not without it's moments, but I didn't think the fluctuating level of violence always matched the movie's tone.

This guys seems to be on the fence, overall he doesn't recommend without trashing it.

Just got back and I liked it - similar in style to something like Bullet Train. I actually really liked the different tones - didn’t shy away from the violence but still had funny moments. Ke Huy Quan is great and I always love seeing Ariana DeBose on screen.

I really hope Quan continues to have a successful acting career. He seems like such a genuine human being.
Probably won’t watch this though.

I was just coming over here to see if there was a post up on this film and what people had to say about it. The review on Collider boiled down to you get to view some fun action sequences, but everything else is at at best half-baked (such as having a star like DeBose in your film but doing nothing with her). I also did not catch that this was in theaters as I thought it was a Netflix streaming film.
If this was on Netflix right now I would give it a watch, but it will be on streaming services soon enough so I can wait. I have not been inside a movie theater for I believe the last 4-6 months (at least, it has been a while), and honestly, what will probably get me back into a theater for the first time this year is the new Captain America film (even if reviews say it sucks, I am almost 100% sure I will still buy a ticket).

I'm going to see this on Monday. I do not expect high art, I expect something fun like Bullet Train.

This is going to open in 3rd place. It has the Dolby Cinema screens out here and it's only 82 minutes with credits.

Sadly, nowhere near as fun as Bullet Train. Quan is terrific, I hope he gets more movies, but the movie is trying to be sentimental and life-affirming, which doesn't go well with the graphic nature of the fight scenes, especially at the end. I didn't think it was terrible, but had less humor than I was expecting.

82 minutes? Are tickets half priced?

I was interested in seeing this and Quan is a very likable actor. But, man every reviewer I’ve watched on YouTube says this movie sucks. I just watched Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde’s review and they are actual film journalists, not movie pundits, and they said it’s awful and lazy. I guess this is a pass then
