The Hitcher (1986) Appreciation Thread.

I know there is a Rutger Hauer one, but I feel this movie is never talked about and it’s so fucking good. Feel it just has a cult following. I know it didn’t do well, but why? Hauer was as equally scary as Roy Batty. The tension, action and gore is brutal. You really feel what Howell is going through. I just love this movie so much. I’ve had all incarnations, but my recent purchase is heaven for me.

I love The Hitcher! I've had the R2 Momentum Pictures 2-disc special edition dvd for a number of years now and will be looking to upgrade someday ...

It’s one of the subset choices this month and there’s a brand new thread about it that will be sure to get lots of posts once it’s day hits on the 22nd.

I’ve never seen it. I should probably remedy that.
It looks like it’s on Max.

Oh man, that foreign set I got has an amazing transfer. It’s never looked better, even in the night scenes. Much better than the German Blu-ray I picked up. I saw it in 4K and it was just spectacular. I mean it’s dated, almost 40 years, but it shines, I think. At least better than I’ve ever seen it since, I think I saw this in the theaters. So great. It’s a perennial favorite and this set packs a wild punch of extras and this hard bound book, that I find quite interesting. Great throwback. 4/5

I got to see a sneak preview of it back when it first came out. I still have the poster they gave out.
edit: I have seen it since then, but it has been quite a while.

I had heard that it was a good movie, so I rented the video from Blockbuster. I remember that I was disappointed. I thought that Rutger Hauer gave a great performance, but the plot was so improbable that I lost my willing suspension of disbelief. The only scene that made an impression on me was the girl tied to the truck. Otherwise, I thought that it was a road movie equivalent of the slasher being somehow ahead of the fleeing girl.

A couple of months ago I started to watch highway killer movies with my wife, Duel didn't age well, for the most part it's pretty boring and the voice over is weird, but The Hitcher is still a great movie. Rutger Hauer is really scary and my wife was freaked out, since he resembles her father.
