Caddo Lake (2024, P: Shyamalan, D: Held/George) S: Dylan O達rien, Eliza Scanlen

  • The Max Original film CADDO LAKE, from producer M. Night Shyamalan and writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George, debuts THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10 on Max.
  • Logline: When an eight-year-old girl mysteriously vanishes, a series of past deaths and disappearances start to link together, forever altering a broken family’s history.
  • Cast: Dylan O’Brien, Eliza Scanlen, Diana Hopper, Caroline Falk, Sam Hennings, with Eric Lange and Lauren Ambrose.
  • About CADDO LAKE: The inspiration for CADDO LAKE was sparked after filmmakers Celine Held and Logan George came across a photograph of the real Caddo Lake online, leading to many visits to the cypress forest that rests on the border of Texas and Louisiana. The film was shot in late 2021 and 2022 in and around Karnak, Texas.
  • Credits: CADDO LAKE is written and directed by Celine Held & Logan George; produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Ashwin Rajan, Kara Durrett and Josh Godfrey; executive producers Kimberly Steward, Harrison Huffman, and Will Greenfield.

I really enjoyed this. It starts off a bit slow for the first 10 or 15 minutes, but then it picked up and pulled me in.

I don't want to openly spoil anything since it just came out, but it reminded me a lot of the movies from
Spoiler:
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, like Resolution, The Endless, and Synchronic, due to the time loops. Though the Benson-Moorhead movies lean more into the horror elements than Caddo Lake does.

I knew absolutely nothing about this movie going in and I'm so glad that was the case. Loved it.

Spoiler:
It was very much like the Netflix series Dark.

Something really weird happened when I watched this...for the first 20 minutes the screen was zoomed in to where I could only see parts of faces. I not knowing thought that was the way it was filmed. I was really annoyed by it, paused the movie and came here to see if anyone else stated that. I thought well that is a very weird artistic choice.

No mention of that anywhere. I returned to watch the movie and rewound about a few minutes and it popped back to what it should look like. So I started over.

I thought it was pretty good. I wouldn't watch it again but it was good enough. It was fairly easy to figure out what was happening before the reveal however.

I thought it was interesting but am not sure if it was actually super clever or just trying to do a mind fuck. I didn't go back and analyze whether everything made sense.

This flick gave me
Spoiler:
Coherence vibes

which is always a good thing. It even fooled me for a while with
Spoiler:
who the main male lead was

.

This film also nails the believability with the family and characters in general, feels really fleshed out. The directing and cinematography are great as well.

Hope this flick gets the attention it deserves. Nice little surprise for me.

I liked the fact it didn't overly hold your hand. Things happen, it explains some of it but most of it is just characters figuring things out for themselves.
