Companion (2025, W/D: Drew Hancock) -- S: Jack Quaid, Sophie Thatcher -- From the producers of Barbarian

New Line Cinema—the studio that brought you “The Notebook”—and the unhinged creators of “Barbarian” cordially invite you to experience a new kind of love story…

Written and directed by Drew Hancock (“My Dead Ex,” “Suburgatory”), “Companion” stars Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets,” “The Boogeyman”), Jack Quaid (“The Boys,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), Lukas Gage (“Smile 2,” “Dead Boy Detectives”), Megan Suri (“Never Have I Ever,” “It Lives Inside”), Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows,” “Blue Beetle”) and Rupert Friend (“High Desert,” “Asteroid City”). The film is produced by the filmmakers behind “Barbarian”—Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Zach Cregger and Roy Lee. The executive producers are Tracy Rosenblum and Jamie Buckner.

Opens January 10th

Yeah that looks wild. I may just stick with seeing the teaser as I am intrigued and don't want any more spoiled.

Loved the initial teaser trailer.

Sadly, the most recent trailer spoils quite a bit more.

For anyone interested in seeing this before Thursday, apparently this is tonight's Regal Mystery Movie.

I think I may have to check this one out this weekend. Jack Quaid has always given off a bit of a closet psychopath vibe in his other roles. Not too familiar with Thatcher other than her brief stint on Book of Boba Fett, but I've heard that's not a very good representation of her capabilities.

She was really good in Heretic.

And she's great on Yellowjackets, playing the younger version of Juliette Lewis' character.

Very good fun I thought. Had some nice twists and turns and while I feared the plot was spoiled by trailer there’s a lot more to it. It may not be an all time banger but better than I expected and Sophie Thatcher is a legit star. Also great to see Harvey Guillen outside of WWDITS.

This was so much fun!! I almost made it the the showing not knowing about Sophie's character. When I would see the second trailer in a theater I would close my eyes because I wanted to go in as blind as possible. Oh well. As stated above, there are other surprises in store. Please see this in a theater. I think word of mouth will do well with this one.

I am going to try and see this this afternoon. I have scrolled past all of the other comments as everyone says go in knowing little, and it appears the second trailer gives away a lot. I watched Strange Darling knowing little more than it was a thriller, and it was great.

Yes.

One of the reviews described Companion as "M3GAN for adults" and that really piqued my interest.

It probably won't win any awards, but I really liked M3GAN, and Abigail, which is a totally different movie, but is also about a young (Vampire) girl that kills people.

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX. It was a lot of fun and wildly entertaining. Sophie Thatcher was great. Unfortunately the second trailer spoiled a key plot point that was revealed in the first act. Nevertheless, I had a good time and recommend it. The less you know, the better. I know some of you here just can’t resist and seek spoilers, but don’t. And yes this is worth seeing in the theater.

My oldest saw a teaser and is interested. She's seen her fair share of R-rated movies, but not too many in the theater where I can't censor, skip, etc. Is this too extreme for a middle schooler and her dad? She's seen a few horror movies and we saw Presence in the theater earlier this week.

In my opinion nothing sadistic or offensive as far as the R rated violence goes. And pretty normal amount of F bombs dropped. But nothing over the top.

I would say "no", but I don't know how far your parental sensibilities go (I get the feeling you are pretty liberal and sensible about realizing what kids already know).

Trying not to give away plot points, but just in case . . .
A couple of sexy sexy times with nothing graphic: 1) offscreen sounds at one point, 2) a smash cut to a closeup of Jack Quaid's "O-face" and then he rolls off Sophie Thatcher and goes to sleep with no nudity).

Mostly themes, gore, and violence. Don't want to drop those spoilers, but blood spurts, some "body gore", and gunfire.
Spot on. I saw the first trailer and stayed away from everything, so I didn't know the perceived "big twist" but felt it was pretty obvious early on.

That said, a good roller coaster follows that! If you are a theater-goer, go see it! If you aren't, you won't miss anything that needs to be seen on the big screen. Either way, definite recommend.

There were a couple of "dangling threads" that bothered me at the end . . .

Spoiler:
I assumed she was going to split the money with Teddy; but we never find out what becomes of him or the fallout (a cop was killed, as was a technician from the company).

Not so much a dangling thread, but they made reference multiple times about limiting their strength as well as their intelligence. If Teddy removed the guard rails and made her totally autonomous, shouldn't she have been able to fight back at the end? That said, I'm glad they went with Chekov's corkscrew instead.

Sophie Thatcher is gorgeous in this, but . . . Megan Suri

Also, got a mini-poster!

It heavily implies that these companions fulfill every aspect of a relationship, both physical and emotional, but all sex scenes are very brief and off camera.
One of the male companions is programmed to have a relationship with another male, and that surprised me in a good way, but when I was in middle school over 30 years ago, I knew very little about the LGBTQ+ community, it was still around the time of the Reagan-era AIDS epidemic, and many in my religious circle would probably have associated such relationships with immorality.

Many of the male victims displayed some degree of chauvanism and I thought it was satisfying that at the end of the movie she in clearly empowered, independent, and fully in control. I'm not going to say that it is a feminist movie, or that she is clearly a positive roll model for young girls, but I don't think you have anything to worry about.

As others have said, it's a fun movie. If you decide to see it, please let us know what you think.

I didn't see any of the teasers, so I went into this not even 100% of the genre. Really enjoyed it, thought it was a fun movie.

I thought they did a really good job with the internal logic of the movie, allowing her to do what they needed for each plot twist without violating the established rules.
And not that it's a big deal, but when you think about it
Spoiler:
The robot must have been installed with all kinds of safety-knowledge, and should have known useful tips like how to escape a crashed/submerged vehicle by using the bars of the car's headrest to pry against the bottom of the window in order to easily shatter the glass. At 100% intelligence, she shouldn't have been doing things the hard way by hitting the center of the window

Crocker, I agree they did a fairly great job staying in their rules (violating that is one of my major movie pet peeves!). It seemed they also did a good job making sure setups paid off, that’s why those two jumped out at me.

Spoiler:
They could have just left out the whole strength part, as it never went anywhere. They also made a point of her saving Teddy, but left that one out there.

As for cranking her intelligence up to 100%, that one didn’t bother me. They said 100% was the equivalent of the intelligence of a Harvard PhD, not access to all knowledge ala The Matrix or that one Scarlett Johansen movie.

Saw this yesterday. I saw the regular instead of IMAX since the times worked out better. Glad I did because I don't think it would have benefitted from the IMAX. I thought it was okay. I thought it seemed like they had a good idea/plot but then had to pad it to make the 1hr 37min mark. There were some tone shifts with Quaid's character that felt rough.

Caught this yesterday and really liked it. I only saw the first trailer and just glanced at the poster going into the theater, so I was pretty dang blind to the plot aside from knowing it's a thriller. I am so glad I did. While the movie still packs a fair amount of surprises in later parts, I felt the little revelation at the start put this movie on the level of Psycho in terms of unexpected turns early in the movie. That being said, had I known the secret revealed in trailers (and from radio DJs reading plot synopses in my area), I would have still enjoyed the movie as it had great acting from Thatcher and a pretty good script ,and some more interesting twists. However, if one can view this totally ignorant to everything other than a general idea, it will be a great experience.

I can't believe they didn't drop a Final Destination: Bloodlines teaser in front of this.
