Conclave (2024, D: Berger) S: Fiennes, Tucci, Lithgow, Rossellini

The pope is dead. The throne is vacant. Conclave is only in theaters this November, starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini.
From director Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front), CONCLAVE follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting the new Pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the dead Pope’s wake, secrets which could shake the foundations of the Church.

It’s odd. I’m not catholic and I’m not even religious but I do find the whole process of selecting a new pope to be interesting. I was fascinated the last few times they’ve selected a new pope.

This was a good book. Had some interesting surprises. I think this will get a good number of Oscar nominations.

I liked this quite a bit. The ending doesn't really work (but I can inform readers of the novel that they didn't change the ending), but that's only 10 minutes of a very well-acted, engaging movie.

I thought this was, for the most part, excellent. I am not sure about the ending... not because I'm bothered by that, just that it seemed unnecessary. Worth the price of admission to hear the audience's reaction though.
The score was awesome.

Yeah the ending wasn't great; kind of abrupt. I thought it was going to be better.

I had a lot invested in this one because this is the exact sort of movie that I live for and these days are so few and far between. Unfortunately it did not quite live up to my expectations.
The craft was immaculate, and I was locked in for the entire 2 hours, but I thought the story was ultimately a little thin. My reaction at the end was pretty much "that's it?". Maybe my tastes are for something a little pulpier, but I didn't find the mysteries all that intriguing, and the ending feels like something that would have been a nuclear bomb 30 years ago, but today doesn't elicit much more than a raised eyebrow.
I'd still recommend the movie, and it's one of the better ones I've seen this year, but I really wanted to love it and I just sort of liked it.

Will stream on Peacock next Friday for those who weren't able to catch this in the theater (like me)
A bunch of you here just signed up for the 1 year Peacock promo. No excuses.
about complaining there is nothing to watch.

I surprisingly skipped the promo this year. It is the one I use the least.

I thought the ending was pretty good. Not sure it was necessary, but Wow, and I was raised Catholic.

I finally saw this on Peacock today and wow, I quite enjoyed this. Gladly, I missed spoilers about the ending and ended up quite surprised.
I'm very glad this wasn't a drawn out 6- or 8-episode miniseries. Prestige television is great, but the sweeping whirlwind of the 2-hour run time was exactly what made this an intriguing story.
Definitely one of my top films of the year. And yeah, I'll pick Ralph Fiennes over Adrien Brody.

With some new current events, I’m wondering if this movie isn’t going to start trending again soon.

I really thought it was going to end with a reveal that all the political intrigue was created so an “enemy” would become Pope. Literally right up to the final reveal, I was expecting it.

I watched this today and I have to agree with many of the other comments here. I thought it was and hour and fifty minutes of greatness followed by the last five minutes of “meh”.

Anyway, Edward Burger with nice efforts back to back. All Quiet on the Western Front and now Conclave both with similarly powerful soundtracks and tight visual command.
