re: My Old Ass (2024, W/D: Park) S: Aubrey Plaza, Maisy Stella

Growing up is a trip. My Old Ass, written and directed by Megan Park, is in select theaters September 13.
In this fresh coming-of-age story, an 18th birthday mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott (Maisy Stella) face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). But when Elliott’s “old ass” starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what’s becoming a transformative summer.

This premiered at Sundance earlier this year, where Amazon paid $15mil for it. Reviews: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/my_old_ass
I hope they start rolling this out to more theatres soon.

I saw this last night too. It was quite good, though not quite as funny as the title and premise would suggest. More of a solid coming of age drama with some humorous moments sprinkled in.
In an alternate universe…
but, like, this movie is a lot better than that dumb idea probably would have been

Saw this as a part of Regal's Monday Mystery Movie.
I'm definitely not the demographic for this film, especially with Director Megan Park's odd approach to representing the Queer community.
Maisy Stella's performance is strong, as is Aubrey Plaza's, though the latter is not nearly in the film as much as the trailers would have you believe.
This definitely has its audience but it feels so much like a re-tread of many stronger films before it.

This released wide this weekend.
I thought it was sweet. Hell of a debut for Maisy Stella. Great performance.

Good, because I wanted to see this in the theater but the only showtime were at noon, ridiculous stuff like that.

So the film takes place in Megan Park with a stop at Aubrey Plaza. Shouldn't the film be called "My Old Address"?

Streamed this on Prime yesterday afternoon. I really liked it overall. They didn't let the small sci-fi element dominate the story and kept it straight coming of age. Great performances from the cast and Plaza proved what a treasure she is with what little screen time she had.

Yeah watched it last night on Prime (and nice all the ads were front loaded). Loved it. Maisy Stella was great in her debut. Aubrey Plaza gets better with every performance. I like how they kept her in the movie using the phone.

I watched this today on Prime, where it says it is the #1 movie, so I guess people are watching it.
I read a review that said the movie's target audience was YA females, and I can see how that is true, but as a very adult man, I could identify with the theme of leaving home that Elliott is facing.
I found the movie to be very sweet and enjoyable. Definitely a low key change from so much of what is thrown at us. (I watched the Thunderbolts trailer right before I started the movie.)
It reminded me very much of "The Man in the Moon," which was Reese Witherspoon's debut, as a coming of age drama about a female protagonist.
I did feel a little bait and switched with how much Plaza was in the movie.
I don't know whether this announces Stella as a star to watch. It seems like there is an endless supply of beautiful and talented young actresses that keep popping up in movies every year, and Stella can be called a product of the Disney factory, in a way.

Stella had somewhat of a run as a child star before taking about a 6 year break before this movie. However, she was in an adult focused series so I don't know if Disney factory is 100% accurate. In terms of Plaza, she appeared on Howard Stern to promote this movie and Stern made a point of mentioning that she wasn't the focal point, so I went in knowing her time would be limited.

Just my way of pointing out that whether it is producing pop stars or new actresses, Disney seems to have a pipeline in place that does not turn off.

At one point in this film, the mother character is playing a board game with colorful marbles. Anyone know what that game is? Maybe it's fictional.

That said I watched this movie with my 19-year-old daughter and she liked the messaging of this movie and the hopeful approach. Was pleasantly surprised that Aubry did a more or less serious role.

Quick aside, don't overlook the power of the Mouse, my wife and I were at Disney World years ago and there was some completely random "Cars"-themed show and at least one former Disney star was driving one of the cars which cracked my wife and me up and thrilled my kids.

Loved it!
Genuine and heartfelt, funny and poignant, mysterious and relatable.
Have to say though, it felt very awkward watching this now, given the recent events in Aubrey Plaza's life.
The only real knock I can make against this was the main character being a lifelong lesbian and now falling for a guy. I know it is a story of self-discovery and learning who one is, but it just seems that personal conflict would have happened a lot sooner given the "small town" nature of the setting. Then again, the heart is a fickle thing and maybe I am being too sensitive to that kind of messaging given the current state of the world.
What the hell was going on in the future?!
