Emilia Pérez (2024, D: Audiard) S: Saldaña, Gascón, Gomez, Paz, Ramírez

From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes Emilia Pérez, an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations. Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) enlists Rita (Zoe Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self. Written and directed by Audiard (Rust and Bone, A Prophet), the double Cannes-winning film also stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Édgar Ramírez.

Releasing on November 13th
Premiered at Cannes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/emilia_perez

This will be one of the films Netflix pushes for Oscar nominations. They paid $12mil for it out of Cannes.

Was able to see this in a theater tonight and this was fantastic! All the performances were amazing. This is the best role I've ever seen Zoe do. Karla and Selena were also very good. It makes sense why they all (plus one other actress in the smallest role of the group) shared Best Actress at Cannes. Much deserved. The music performances were very well done.

I kind of loved this. What a cool, super-original film. Saldana and Gascon were both fantastic. I was really surprised and moved by this one. Maybe my favorite of 2024.

I finally found someone who really liked this movie! I keep seeing in the running (or winning) awards but haven't seen anyone on the forums I read that actually really liked it.
I just watched it and thought it was okay; not great. I would never have thought it would be in the running for best picture.

Yeah, I know I’m on an island on this one. But I dug it.

Most musicals just have to be a little but better than average to be considered at the big award shows.

I tried watching this and made it to about the halfway point. Just wasn't my thing.

So you're saying there is still hope for Joker 2 to get a nomination?

Is Joker 2 considered better than average? I mean nothing against La La Land, it's a perfectly ordinary rom com with a non-romantic ending, but as a musical it's regarded as something special.

I guess it says something about me that the easiest best picture nominee for me to watch ended up being the last one I watched. Thought it was pretty shallow. I love a good musical, but this was just weird. It didn't help that the songs weren't particularly memorable, and frequently much more annoying than effective.

Since she's probably still going to win the Oscar even with all of the controversy this film has drawn, I will acknowledge that Saldaña was really good and probably had the only musical number I liked (at the charity party).

I actually tried 3 times to watch and just could not make it past 15 minutes. For some reason I had a very strong aversion to this to the point that I wasn't bored or uninterested but more that I stronglt wanted to stop watching. I know that is extreme but it just creeps me out for some reason.

Netflix breaks silence on Emilia Perez controversy

for the first time, the streaming giant’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, publicly responded to criticism over Gascon’s racist social media posts while appearing on an episode of The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, released on Wednesday, USA Today reported.

‘Bummer’

Bajaria expressed disappointment that the controversy had overshadowed the efforts of the 100 talented individuals involved in ..
Gascoin faced heavy criticism on social media after screenshots of some of her earlier posts went viral.

In the controversial posts, Gascon denigrated Muslims, George Floyd, Black people, and diversity at the Oscars. The posts date back as recently as 2021

With the exception of the charity ball and the scene where the workers are singing about why they're joining the search, all the other singing reminded me of musicals like Les Miserable, where there's "songs" between the big songs, that are really just dialogue scenes with music and rhyming verse.

My big struggle with the movie was starting with the story with the lawyer character and putting so much emphasis on her point of view. I never cared about her, and was frustrated we didn't start with Emilia. She wound up feeling like a supporting character in a story I wished had been more about what she was thinking/feeling/doing.

So aside from Supporting Actress is the film pretty much guaranteed to get shut out in the other categories?

Whose to say? Has a film that's received so many nominations not won at at least half of them? Seriously asking, since I don't really follow the Academy Awards, and only learned about this movie because no one seems to shut up about it. Not even exaggerating that, to date, I've never seen so much as a single ad for it. So when the complaints first started, I said "never heard of it", shrugged, and went about my business. Eventually YouTube decided to make it my business, despite my playing video game news videos in the background whilst at work.

Not that I believe it has any bearing on Emilia Perez chances, but one bit of Oscar trivia I remember is The Color Purple received 11 nominations (everything from Best Picture to Best Original Song) and won nothing.

Damn. Was that the original or the remake? If the former, I always thought it was a beloved classic. Never suspected that it didn't have at least a best actress/actor award.

The original. Also, of those 11 nomination, Best Director was not one of them.

Scorsese also has two that went 0 for 10 (Gangs of New York and the Irishman).

Well that blows.

Wasn't aware Gangs of New York had any nominations. I recall it not being particularly liked upon release (lots of complaints regarding its length despite simultaneously feeling rushed in parts), with the exception of Daniel Day Lewis' performance. I recall enjoying it, wonky pacing notwithstanding. I really dug The Irishman, but thought it went straight to streaming and thus ineligible for nominations.

Watched it going in to it completely blind. I thought it was complete crap. Near unwatchable. I had no idea what this movie was about. I didn't know it was a musical. I absolutely love musicals. This was terrible. The songs were terrible. Incredibly repetitive, uninventive lyrics, melodically blase'. Just terrible. The plot was just so hokey. I couldn't get in to the story at all. It didn't nearly delve in to deeper territory like it seemed like it was heading to. Character motivations just weren't believable. It was just a complete hot mess to me.

But maybe I just have terrible taste. I have no idea why this movie is getting so much awards attention.
