I was barely aware of him. Out of all his movies, I've seen Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge, and The Leopard.

RIP to a French film legend who also dated the captivating Romy Schneider back in the early 60s. La Piscine is essential summer viewing for me. Enjoyed his performance in Louis Malle's segment of Spirits Of The Dead, as well. Will have to watch Le Samourai at some point.

RIP Alain. Le Samourai is so good. He was so cold and cool in the flick.

RIP. I mostly know him from his Melville films (like Le Samourai which is awesome), Spirits of the Dead, and Purple Noon, which was also a really cool film.

Loved him in LE SAMOURAI, THE SICILIAN CLAN and RED SUN. The latter co-starred him with two other icons: Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune. Delon was the villain.

He had earlier starred with Bronson in a mediocre French caper thriller, HONOR AMONG THIEVES (1968), which introduced Bronson to the world of Euro genre films and paved the way for the American to become a huge international star. I think it was also the first time we saw Bronson's moustache.

Also great in Antonioni's L'Eclisse.
He sure is represented well in the Criterion catalog.

For a couple decades he truly embodied "movie star" status and was an international sex symbol. Women wanted him, men wanted to be him.

I can't believe I'm the first to mention Airport '79! Oh wait, yes I can. That movie is terrible. But I love it.

As far as other Delon films that have already been mentioned, Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge, Purple Noon, and The Sicilian Clan are all great. I also really like Un Flic (even if it's not up to par with the other Melvilles). Three Men to Kill is another French crime thriller that I enjoy a lot, even if it's a bit junkier than some of Delon's other classics.

From the late 70s- early 80s stuff, I enjoyed Death of A Corrupt Man even though it's kind of genre ish. Anyway, RIP to an acting legend.

Re: Alain Delon dies aged 88

While he was popular in France and maybe even globally, Delon is really not a common household name in the US, unless it has changed in recent years which is unlikely.

I remember in High School, a foreign exchange student tried to bring up Alain Delon as example of a famous movie star, except not one single person has even heard of his name. I had heard of his name at the time, but never seen a single Delon movie either as a teenager.

Somehow I forgot about Mr. Klein. Yet another all-time classic!

If people reading this really aren't familiar with Delon's filmigraphy, definitely check out at least some of the films mentioned in this thread. He truly was one of the great stars in movie history.

Re: Alain Delon dies aged 88

Within the past few days, I re-watched HONOR AMONG THIEVES (aka FAREWELL, FRIEND), LE SAMOURAI and SCORPIO.

I had seen SCORPIO when it came out and watched it again in 2013, so it was a pleasant surprise re-watching it. It has its flaws, but I thought Delon had his fullest, most physically demanding and most interesting Hollywood role in this CIA-themed conspiracy thriller from Michael Winner and it's great seeing Delon and a great from a preceding generation, Burt Lancaster, interact so extensively and with such great chemistry. Plus, it has that assured, smoothly paced globetrotting intrigue 1970s flair from all that location filming in Paris, Washington DC and Vienna.

LE SAMOURAI is a primer, of course, in pure French cinema Delon. There'd be no movie here without him.
