It was probably Alzheimer's disease. Her son announced it awhile ago.
I can't say I was a huge fan and I did not see much of her filmography. I do recall seeing Gloria as a kid and I thought it was a really good movie. Of course most remember her from The Notebook.

A Woman Under the Influence was her masterclass performance.
Oddly, just saw a new Criterion Closet video with Channing Tatum and Zoe Kravitz today, and Kravitz picked up "A Woman Under the Influence" and highlighted Rowlands performance in it.

I would see her pop up occasionally in movies I saw in the past.

It might be saying a lot, but the greatest performance I've ever seen by an actress was by her in AWUTI.

A beautiful lady with super talent to match. The Cassavetes roles were standouts but anything she appeared in benefited from her talent. Its great seeing her pop up in reruns of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour on MeTV, one she co-starred with Cassavetes. She was also in a terrific COLUMBO where a new fangled red LED digital watch plays a role.

Some of the all time great screen performances in her late husbands films. Especially the aforementioned A Woman Under The Influence. I also really liked her in Woody Allen’s underrated Another Woman. I think the last thing I saw her in was The Skeleton Key. Great actor. RIP.
