While I didn't see Director JT Mollner's debut back in 2016 (Outlaws and Angels), I'll probably check this out with my Regal Unlimited Pass in a few weeks.

It got the Mike Flanagan seal of approval

I just saw it using my Regal Unlimited, haha.

It was good; worth seeing. I didn't read anything about it beforehand.

I thought this was great. It plays with perception and subverts expectations.

Willa. Fitzgerald. Wow. I've been a fan since Scream: The Series... and am glad she has garnered some attention from S1 of Reacher. This is a standout performance.

Giovanni Ribisi as a cinematographer now? I'd like to see more! This was some great work.

Just saw this and YES!! this movie was everything! Wow, the cast was great, it fucking looked amazing (Giovanni God bless you), the sound, the location, the editing all on point.

If this is playing somewhere close to you, please make an effort to see this. I was the only person in my theater and I would have loved to hear an audience live reaction.

This will certainly boom from word of mouth on whatever streaming site it goes to.

FYI : There is also a post-credit audio cue

From what I've heard, the only audience reaction is when
Spoiler:
the mountain couple puts the whole stick of butter in the frying pan

One change I wish they would have made:
Spoiler:
I wish they would have swapped which cop believed her and which one did not. Having the young, lady copy believe her and then the old guy cop call her a "dumb bitch" was a little too "anti-MeToo' or 'pro-incel', A little too "look, women lie too so maybe we shouldn't believe them if they say they were sexually assaulted," or like when people say "all lives matter." I thought. If they would have had the old guy cop believe her and the new cop say they should follow procedure, I think it would have removed that element that kind of took me out of the story

Really loved this.

but
Spoiler:
you’re telling me the cops wouldn’t have found a gun on her, wouldn’t have even CHECKED her?? Cmon now.

But I can easily forgive that because this was fantastic.

Willa Fitzgerald should get a nom for this. Mah gawd. She was next level. I couldn’t see any of the work she was doing for this character. Seems like it was just HER.

4/5

I really got a kick out of this one. It's almost unbelievably gorgeous (if you see it in the right auditorium), thanks to Ribisi, and even though the somewhat gimmicky structure made me smirk at first, it totally worked in the end. It ends up being a cool misdirection, giving the movie a sense of unpredictability. Fantastic lead performance, for sure.

Re: Strange Darling (2024, D: Mollner) S: Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner

I caught this a couple of nights ago and thought it was a solid thriller and a great looking film. I'm so glad good old fashioned film stock isn't entirely dead and hope that this and Cuckoo mark the start of a resurgence for the format. Seriously, it's great to see a movie on the big screen that doesn't look like the brightness needs to be turned up.

I struggle to think of any missteps in Strange Darling, but I do have a couple of questions:

Spoiler:
When the Lady runs out to the motel balcony she sees an oldtimer peek around from next door. She says 'He's got a gun' and the guy replies, 'So do I.' That's the last time we see that guy, right?

I think this happens before we find out the big twist: the Lady sees the Demon coming towards the hippies' house but we don't know where Barbara Hershey's character went. Then the Lady hears a gunshot in the distance, suggesting that the Demon killed Genevieve (Hershey). But we find out afterwards that Genevieve got away...so what was that shot about?

I get where you're coming from, but I'm not sure that swap would've worked.
Spoiler:
The girl cop is a lot younger than the guy so I saw their attitudes as being an inexperienced cop acting on impulse versus a seasoned veteran slowing down to assess the situation. I would have a much tougher time buying a young cop being cautious and level-headed while the older one dives in head first and takes the situation at face value.

I think the swap would only work if the female cop had been older and the male had been the greenhorn. If the film had left the casting as is but had the young female being skeptical and the middle-aged man acting without thinking, it would've seemed like a scenario that could only happen in a movie, that it was trying too hard to show that some men do automatically believe women when they say they've been victimized.

I'm trying to think back to when I initially saw that scene because what you're saying about it being too anti-metoo may have occurred to me at the time. Honestly, I can't remember, but looking back on it, I land on experience being the determining factor.

I wanted to try and catch this movie this weekend but the only theater playing it is only doing one showing at 9:30 at night after only one week. Guess I'm waiting for streaming. Will probably wind up blind buying the streamer version as it's typically just a $5 difference between buying and renting.

I ran into a similar issue when I missed the initial release week of the film.

Took advantage of having Monday off by catching the only screening at a local theater (9pm) with a close friend last night.

I'm glad that I went into the film blind, having only seen the initial trailer.

Fantastic performance from Willa Fitzgerald and gorgeous cinematography from Giovanni Ribisi.

Definitely will be on my end of year list.

Cool you got to see it. I used to live in Knoxville, TN where Regal had an entire theater building dedicated to lower budget/art house fare back in the mid 2000s. Back then I could count on having at least a month to catch a movie of this nature.

Saw this again and am changing my rating to 4.5/5

This is neck and neck with Furiosa as my favorite film of 2024 thus far.

Fantastic.

Re: Strange Darling (2024, D: Mollner) S: Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner

I'm exhausted after a long day but tonight's 9:45pm screening was the only evening show at my local AMC all week, so I went for it.

I'm so glad I did. This is a great movie.

I went in 100% cold except the title, the cinematographer, and the Rotten Tomatoes score.

GO IN COLD, PLEASE GO IN COLD!!!

I did a blind buy of this on digital. Will watch tonight. Have no idea what it's about aside from it being described as a thriller and it has Willa Fitzgerald, who I really dig. Hope it's worth it.

Wow, what a movie. And Fitzgerald in her last scene was unbelievably fantastic. Don't think I've seen acting quite like that before.
5/5.

I guess it was a spoiler but I don't think so, really. Basically it starts over here and then it goes over there and oh wow, except you said it in a much more colorful way!

Saw this last night and yes, this was something worth watching. Agree with everyone else that one needs to go into it totally blind to any plot details other than it's a thriller. Fitzgerald did not disappoint.

Re: Strange Darling (2024, D: Mollner) S: Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner

Pretty damned good movie. Definitely one you want to go into cold.

I did figure out the "twist" early on because
Spoiler:
the film's chapters were shown out of order. It was pretty obvious that they were hiding something and the girl being chased down was more than just a simple victim.

Ribisi qas a surprisingly good cinematographer. The movie had a nice old-school 1970s look and feel, and made me think of the neo-grindhouse movement with films like Grindhouse, Hobo with a Shotgun, and Machete.

Excellent performances by Fitzgerand and Garner... Kind of got a laugh out of one of the reveals...
Spoiler:
when Lady was going through Demon's wallet and saw the badge, I got a chuckle because I thought Demon looked like a cop.

With all of the discussion about subverting expectations lately, this movie shows how it's done successfully. It's baked into the plot, themes, and construction of the film, and not just throwing random curve balls at the audience.

I thought some of the developments were kind of predictable (see my post above), but it still fucked with my head because I knew something wasn't right early on, but I was trying to figure out how deep it went.

Spoiler:
I also wasn't 100% the redhead and the blond were the same person until she took the wig off. When I first saw her, I thought she might have been the Demon's first victim, or an accomplice for the real killer. I suppose that was by design by not casting a well-known or easily recognized actress for the part.
