2025 Academy Awards
Kimmel and John Mulaney both passed on hosting the 2025 Oscars
Maybe Hugh Jackman should host since he will have some buzz from the Deadpool vs Wolverine movie and he could do some musical numbers which has been missing from the Oscar hosting duties for a long time.
Maybe if there was no social media there would be more people willing to do the job and not care if they bomb like the old days since people would forget and move on.
ABC is said to have made offers to Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney, both of whom passed on the opportunity, as first reported by Puck News. Fortunately for the Academy and its host network, there’s still plenty of time, with the Oscars not slated to air until Sunday, March 2.
The first outreach had gone to Kimmel, its late night host, who’s already emceed the Academy Awards four times, including the past two years. (Ironically, his statement upon accepting the offer in 2023 read: “I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times.”) Nevertheless, he was the obvious choice, in large part because his last foray was widely praised and because he’s already part of the Disney family. But Kimmel ultimately said no, as he reportedly did hosting this year’s Emmy awards, which will also be carried on ABC.
And while Mulaney addressed the possibly more recently, telling THR in June that he “wouldn’t necessarily say no”; in the end, he decided to pass for this year. (Don’t bother asking about the year after, since he insists he doesn’t plan more three months in advance.) Though hosting the Oscars is a prestigious opportunity and still a major platform, it’s also a massive, months-long and often thankless undertaking. Plus, Mulaney would have had to give up other opportunities, including another likely (and hugely lucrative) stand-up tour.

Too bad, I would have loved to see Mulaney host it.

Six weeks after the next POTUS is sworn in. The mood in Hollywood is either going to be exuberant or suicidal.

I don't know if he is interested but maybe Sebastian Maniscalco?
He is not too controversial I think and seems likeable.

I'll throw Eddie Murphy's name out there.

I’d like the Only Murders trio of Martin, Short and Gomez.

He's a well-known comic that plays arena shows (in September he's playing 5 shows at Madison Square Garden, 4 of which are already sold out) and has a critically-acclaimed sitcom on HBO Max.

He's not exactly under the radar.

Well he's not exactly a household name either. And remember that the Oscars aren't a US television event, but rather a worldwide one. You need somebody extremely famous to host it. Someone whose fame transcends the insular world of stand up comedy. A superstar.

Maniscalco is a huge comic... and I say that as someone who isn't even a fan. I don't know how you live in Vegas and never heard of him.

But really, do we need someone to get up for 15 minutes and do a comedy routine or roast the room?

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
Outside of the USA he's a complete unknown. The American audience is the most important, but international audiences aren't irrelevant.

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
To be very clear, I am not advocating for Maniscalco to be the host. Nor am I saying having those three host the show was a good idea.

While I'm only one person, the difference between that guy and those three names is that I'd heard of those three names before they hosted.

That's exactly what I'm saying. They might have been a total flop (and they were), but they were all at least movie stars, famous for performances for things other than stand up specials.

He did that movie with De Niro in 2023 based loosely on his relationship with his dad

To be clear, I don't think he's the right person to host the Oscars. But the strange, "I've never heard of him so he must never have done anything of consequence" attitude about him is not warranted. In addition to what's already been mentioned about him, he was also a voice actor in IF and The Super Mario Bros. Movie and played smaller parts in The Irishman and Green Book. It's not like he's never done anything in Hollywood, but his profile isn't necessarily at Oscar-hosting level.

You know a name that I've not heard mentioned yet who I think would be a GREAT host? Robert Downey Jr. He's an Oscar winner, a superstar, funny, charming. Universally loved. Plus the obvious corporate synergy with ABC/Disney.
I doubt he'd want to do it, even if a team of writers did most of the work. But if he were interested, he'd be a great choice.

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
I never heard of that guy either nor have I heard of that Mulaney guy. Nor do I know who Regina Hall is. Nor do I recall Amy Schumer or Wanda Sykes ever appearing on the Oscars let alone hosting them. I just know them as stand-up comics...and just barely.
I've heard of Hugh Jackman, Eddie Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr.--of those so far seriously suggested in this thread as possible Oscar hosts. But I'm not sure how good either would be as a host. The last host I liked might well have been Billy Crystal...or was it Bob Hope?
