Blink Twice (2024, D: Kravitz) S: Ackie, Tatum, Shawkat, Rex, Arjona, Osment, Slater, MacLachlan, Davis

This summer, make some memories. Watch the official trailer for #BlinkTwiceMovie directed by Zoë Kravitz and starring Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum. Only in theaters August 23rd.

When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. It’s paradise. Wild nights blend into sun soaked days and everyone's having a great time. No one wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. There is something wrong with this place. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive. With an ensemble cast including Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum, Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan and Geena Davis, BLINK TWICE is a wild new psychological thriller directed by Zoë Kravitz.

I went into this blind, not even sure of what genre it was going to be, and had a very fun time with it. It was dazzling seeing so many great and underused actors all introduced in the first scene. I enjoyed the gruesome finale, the set visuals, and the dark humor. I mean it as a compliment, not a criticism when label the movie as a trashy exploitation flick.

One thing that sticks out to me is the use of music during the
Spoiler:
mass rape sequence
. It felt to me like such an inappropriate choice, and not in an ironic way like "Singin' In The Rain" in A Clockwork Orange or "You're The One That I Want" in Deadpool & Wolverine. The music seems to be uplifting the brutality, celebrating it, but not in a way that feels creepy, but had me thinking, "This is aesthetically a bad choice."

I can't quite put my finger on why the music in this sequence doesn't work, as I've seen countless films that used inappropriate music during disturbing scenes to great effect. I wonder if it because the song here sounds like it is being played as score, and it would have fit the scene better if it were diegetic music?

As the end credits rolled, I couldn't help to think that I would have liked the movie more if Zoë had played the lead part herself.

Kept hearing this was a bold female directorial debut with a message.

This was a well crafted exploitation film and nothing more. Sleazy and devoid of any tinge of a moral outcome.

Saw this yesterday afternoon and felt the same. It's core messages feel oddly muddled.

I also didn't click with Naomi Ackie, finding Adria Arjona's character light years more interesting.

This made think of The Glass Onion if Wes Craven had made it. It's fun in spots and suitably grotesque in others. It ain't perfect but it's solidly well done.

I think Kravitz shows a lot of potential as a director. And can Tatum actually act? Cuz he was pretty solid in that final act.

Watched this with a group of people in a local movie night and some things definitely had a couple folks squirming.

I've not seen this yet, but the trailers have me mildly intrigued.

The trailers don't really give me much of an idea what the movie will be about... if it's a horror movie, or a drama, or a comedy, or somewhere in between, or even qhat the plot is about. In theory, that's a good thing, but in practice, that kind of marketing just doesn't grab me and doesn't make eager to see the movie and puts it in the "wait until it's on cable or Netflix" category.

Pretty good movie. The trailers didn't give away much, which is actually good, but did provide a good feel for tone and plot of the film.

So it's basically a
Spoiler:
Bill Cosby on Epstein Island mash-up.

After watching it, I did a quick second run-through of the movie because it had a lot of clues and foreshadowing dropped into it and I wanted to see if I caught everything.

Nice red herring with
Spoiler:
the old lady shouting "Red Rabbit." I thought maybe it was some kind of code word to trigger a brainwashed person to do something.

One thing that kind of bothered me, though, is
Spoiler:
how the memory-erasing perfume worked. It seemed really plot-dependent as to when and how it would work. And I'm not sure how it could specifically cause everyone to completely forget Jess existed when it didn't seem to erase any other memories around the island.
I suppose it's just something you sort of have to go with, but I tend to closely examine and scrutinize plot points like this.

I was also a bit puzzled by Lucas, the blond guy with the black eye...

Spoiler:
From a practical standpoint, I'm not sure why Slater even had him there since he didn't indulge in the gang rapes. At one point he was referred to as a "nice guy" and Slater tells him he has a special place in hell for doing "nothing," so it seems like Kravitz was trying to make a point about passive nice guys who do nothing when bad things are going down, but it seemed a little too heavy-handed and on-the-nose symbolic. Kind of one of those things where you're trying too hard to make a point and it doesn't make a lot of sense in the context of the plot.

At one point, I thought he was just another rape victim/sex slave who was being mind-wiped by Slater and his crew. I think it might have been more interesting to have be just another sex slave, and the girls kill him without realizing or occurring to them that he might be in the same boat as they were. Which makes the film more tragic and even darker.

On a related note, at the end
Spoiler:
when it was shown that Frida had turned the tables and turned Slater into her husband/slave... I get the point they were trying to make with all of the stuff about reclaiming power, but it seemed a little too over-the-top and unworkable in a real-world scenario, so it kind of pulled me out of the film.

This was pretty entertaining. You just have to check your brain at the door going into it.

This was enjoyable. Fast paced.

Movie was a little too optimistic to feel real. Rich people who do this kind of thing definitely get away with it. Killing a tech billionaire who abuses women was kinda like watching the Inglorious Basterds kill Hitler. Or all the people portrayed in Taken who most certainly get away with it. Careful out there, ladies.

From the trailer, I was expecting a scifi twist similar to Get Out.

Watched this and thought it was mediocre. Kravitz directed it well but the story was meh. Glad it was only a DVD rental from the library.
