An expansion of the Suits universe is now closer than ever.
NBC has given a pilot order to Suits: L.A. from Aaron Korsh, the creator and writer of the original series, from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group. It is now set to begin production in late March in Vancouver. As Deadline revealed exclusively on Thursday, Victoria Mahoney will direct and executive produce the offshoot.
Suits: L.A. would not be a reboot or revival but more like a new chapter in the vein of the CSI and NCIS franchises featuring new characters in a new location.
According to the project’s logline, Suits: L.A. is centered on Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York, who has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is at a crisis point, and to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career.
Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both him and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel, leading Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved.
Korsh executive produces alongside David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein, who were EPs with him on the original series.
Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Gina Torres, Sarah Rafferty, Meghan Markle and Rick Hoffman all starred in Suits during the end of the USA Network’s (part of NBCUniversal) popular Blue Sky era. None of the original actors is set to appear in the pilot, according to the script, though Adams has shown interest in reprising the role of Mike Ross. Should the L.A. offshoot land a series order, maybe there will be more interest from the original cast to pay a visit to the Golden State.
The renewed interest in the franchise stems from Netflix’s streaming of the series in mid-2023. It recently broke records becoming the “most watched streaming original in the U.S.,” beating Apple’s Ted Lasso.
This is the second offshoot stemming from the Suits universe which also includes the Torres-centered spinoff Pearson, which aired on USA in 2019 before it was canceled after one season. Pearson is currently available to stream via Peacock.

Reading the phrase "Suits universe" fills me with ire.
Sci-fi and fantasy shows can rightly be described as taking place in a special universe because the laws of physical reality are different than the universe we all live in. "Suits" is set in the same universe that we all live in.

I started Suits a month ago and now I'm on season 3.
I'm enjoying it. I like the lack of courtroom scenes.

Is Suits really a "streaming original" though? Didn't it air on USA, unless I am misunderstanding something here.

Yeah, that wording is misleading. It's only available on streaming today but was a USA original when it aired on TV. As opposed to something like Seinfeld which is on a streaming service but still airs regularly on TV in syndication.

The core charm and hook of Suits was Mike and his recall ability and his relationship with Harvey. I'll give this a try, but it may fail like the spin-off with Jessica. I'd rather watch Mike/Harvey and their non-profit in Washington state.

Apparently "Suits" has a lotta streaming eyes on it.
I wonder how the spin off will do.
Story here final numbers as of Jan 2024

Suits" was the most-streamed title of 2023 — a sign that licensed content is here to stay.
According to third-party rating service Nielsen, the USA Network series was viewed for nearly 58 billion minutes last year after it spent 12 consecutive weeks at the top of Nielsen's viewership charts.
Netflix (NFLX) acquired the drama in July. It's also available to stream on Comcast's Peacock (CMCSA).

I’m not sure a Suits made for NBC will work. When it aired on USA, they had a little more leeway creatively.
Mike and Harvey’s relationship was the draw, but Sarah Rafferty was just on fire. Probably the hottest red head on TV then.

I watched several of those USA network shows back in that era, but never watched Suits. Lately I've been considering giving it a try on Netflix because it's always being promoted there.

Picked up to series by NBC. But, there is no schedule for it at the moment. Might be held to Midseason 2025 or pushed to Fall 2025

Definitely not. Whole point of the spinoff is to start over with cheap talent. Although, Adams seems to be taking any gig these days with his commercials and adds for mobile games.

If there's absolutely no connection other than the name, then I'm not sure how it's actually a spinoff and not just a new legal show from the same creative team. Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things.

That's how most spin-offs go. Usually, the main show is still airing so you get some cross-over to build up the viewers. Can't do that here since the main show has been off air for years. They are assuming that the recent surge in popularity the original got from being on Netflix will carry viewers to this when it comes out.

It's not as if the original cast is too busy. As it stands, I'd call it a reboot before I'd call it a spinoff.
But I get what you're saying.

...and now it's a proper spinoff in my mind. And now I rest.

Some of the other actors gave an E interview and at least said, they would be willing to return, but I see the show more as a CSI: Miami, Law & Order: SVU kind of show. Same name, same world but new characters.

Harvey Specter seems to be the logical choice to help launch a spin-off. I read the character descriptions and it seems that Amell's character has a past with Harvey.
I became a big fan of Sarah Rafferty towards the end of the original show. Gorgeous red head and sexy as hell. But she's not a lawyer and it wouldn't make sense for Donna to appear in the spinoff.

Teaser. They are using the original theme song.
