Bluey is an Australian animated preschool television series which premiered on ABC Kids on 1 October 2018. The program was created by Joe Brumm and is produced by Queensland-based company Ludo Studio. It was commissioned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the British Broadcasting Corporation, with BBC Studios holding global distribution and merchandising rights. The series made its premiere on Disney Junior in the United States and is released internationally on Disney+.

Synopsis - The show follows Bluey, an anthropomorphic six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy who is characterised by her abundance of energy, imagination and curiosity about the world. Not a parent? Don't know what a Bluey is let alone a Chattermax? Well Bluey is only the greatest Pre-K family show this side of Sesame Street. Sure on the surface it's all cute and cuddly with animation. But dive in and you'll find heart warming stories about what life is like for the average Australian family. Dealing with surprisingly deep topics with a warmth I've never seen in a TV show. These 7 minute episodes are so incredibly well done. Both the animation and the story telling are just way beyond most children's entertainment. Chilli (mum) and Bandit (dad) are perfect examples of what we strive to be as parents.

I prefer the more sentimental episodes. The one where Chilli chased the kids with her dad all over and ended with Chilli sitting on the dock with her dad was good.

If there is one thing I don’t like about Bluey, it’s that they sometimes give the kids too much power over their parents. There seem to be a lot of episodes where Mom and Dad have to do everything Bluey and Bingo want them to, resulting in the parents going overboard in taking orders from the kids.

My kids love Bluey though.

Oh yeah that's one thing that I have about it as well. The parents are just unrealistic with how much they go along with their kids. It's like that sitcom trope of how no one has to work and they always have free time together. It's funny but it kind of bothered me so much that now I do try to keep it in the back of my mind just how much it means to play with your kids. And the fact that it's so fleeting a time where your kids even WANT to play with you. So I have tried to take it to heart and play with them when I can. But nope, no matter how much I love my kids I'm not dancing through a crosswalk in front of a bunch of cars.


Oh my yes. Grandad I'm tearing up just thinking about the episode. On the surface it's just a lot of fun with the kids and grandad being chased by mum but there are themes of aging parents and how we still need them and the passage of time just below the surface. That ending though.

My favorite is Sleepytime.

Just an incredibly well put together episode. Creative. Funny. Touching. Holst's Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity really helps a lot with this one though. Like a lot of the best cartoons to save on money they utilize a lot of classical music and this episode uses it in an amazing way. An absolutely beautiful episode.

The first episode we ever watched was on vacation and it was Camping (where she goes camping and meets a friend who speaks only French). Never heard of the show and we were all mesmerized (this is before it came to Disney Plus, when it first started airing on the Disney Channel). But there are so many more that are now our favorites. For some reason I always remember the one where Bandit is self conscious about playing a whale in front of another dad (who he doesn't even know) at the park.

There's an episode in the latest season where they introduce Chili's sister (and you're like what, where has she been all this time, and they explain it) that had unfortunately been spoiled for me but I think it would've had a bigger impact if not for that.

Then there's another recent episode, called Space, which is perhaps the only episode where I was like "what the heck is this episode about." I read an article about what the writers were going for and I'm not sure they landed it exactly but I'm probably not the target audience for it either.

Some of the best explanations I've seen about why Bluey crosses over to adults so well for a preschoolers show was made by the "Odd Ones Out" guy:

He is spot on about that wretched Caillou. And I do struggle to think of another show for that age bracket that focuses so much on the parents, and not to the detriment of the kids either.

There's also a ton of voiceover cameos which are pointed out in the video.

Lastly the stage play is in canon with the show.

Yeah, I can see that argument. It's also wish fulfillment for the kids, though. Just makes me look bad as a parent when I'm not willing to embarass myself in public for the sake of my kids (which ties into the episode I mentioned above, but they do go above and beyond when they act out stuff around unwitting neighbors and in the store). Still, such a wholesome family.

We saw Bluey's Big Play Live on Stage the other day. It was a lot of fun. Really short, only about an hour long, but still a lot of fun. Even my 11 year old liked it and wasn't bored. Interesting that they had Chilli's sister Brandy as a plot point. After hearing so much about the episode with her in it, Onesies, finally seeing it on Disney+ was great. It's really unreal how much subtext is in these 7 minute preschool kids shows.

Stickbird - really great episode. I wonder what was bothering Bandit, but a great episode to remind us to let go of things that are bothering us and live in the moment. I wonder if the trick of throwing away your worry will work with my kids.

Dragon - so we finally get bit of an insight on Chilly's mom. [spoiler]My wife also has lost her mom a while back so that episode really had her in tears.[/quote] This show really is amazing how they capture all the little vignettes of life and parentling in such a succinct manner.

Cricket - I really loved this episode. I don't understand a damn thing about cricket but it was very creative way to show how just the little things in your life can have such a big outcome who you become. Challenges really teach you a lot and force you to adapt and get better. I'm also a real sucker for when they show the future and him giving himself in the future a high five was a cool moment.

For sure. But it's still amazing to me they keep up the great storytelling through this many episodes.

When I scroll down season 3 in Disney Plus, my Apple TV always seems to error out and not let us select anything. Is it just me? We've been watching through the little section that has "new Bluey episodes" but it's kind of annoying.

My kids have been working their way through season 3 on Disney+. There are some real gems there!

That episode did not disappoint. Absolutely loved it. I loved all the connections that happened all throughout the episode. Literally the butterfly effect.

What an amazing, amazing episode.

And the point of the episode being you make the best decision you can and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't, but you don't know at first still lands, I think. Plus they could have absolutely taken the easy way out once the brother changed his mind, but it was just another layer, then the callback to the coin, the house, and that being the final "sign." Yeah nothing is ever going to work out in real life like that but still really cool.

Though I think I"m happiest for Winton's dad (the English Bulldog). That's the kind of longform storytelling I watch Bluey for. Also grandpa Bob finally found himself. And Aunt Brandy's surprise. Man this would be a great finale but I don't want it to be the finale, so maybe I need to think about the message of this episode a little more and realize maybe it's fine either way.

Oh, and I forgot the other setup to this episode, saving the caterpillar, which sets a ton of stuff in motion in this episode.

Such a fantastic episode, wife and I were tearing up as the boys enjoyed watching it as well. My son spotted the balloon right away and yelled "greenie!!" They remember it all, the Brandy cameo was great, seeing Bob and Stripe laugh together was awesome. So many great eggs in it.

That's how I know my family watched some episodes without me, I didn't even remember the balloon...

I caught a couple of episodes for the first time yesterday. Quite enjoyed them, and of course my kids did as well. I'll have to go back and watch them from the beginning.

SURPRISE EPIDOSE!!

Literally. Shocking everyone, they released one more episode titled Surprise.

I tell you what this has been quite the emotional roller coaster this past couple weeks. From them putting the house up on the market, including a for real life listing on a real estate website. To the ultimate 30 minute long episode calling back over the last 3 seasons of Bluey. To this episode seemingly a rather "normal" episode until the last 30 seconds.



It's pretty mind boggling to think that this is a not just a kids show. But a preschool kids show. The level of care that is given in each 9 minute episode is really amazing. It's quite a bit of fun connecting to other parents over this show and seeing how vested we all are in these cartoon talking dogs.

I mean it was called Surprise.

Also gives the feeling of "hey this show might be ending" but I've heard that that's not true, so happy day.

While we wait for news about season 4, Bluey is getting 20 minisodes, each about 1-3 minutes long, starting this July.
