Justified: City Primeval (S1E05) - "You Good?" - 8/8/23

Carolyn's past becomes Raylan's present. Mansell puts a plan into action. Written by Eisa Davis and Chris Provenzano. Directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan.

This episode was a bore, though I’m glad to see Paul Caldero back for another episode as Raymond Cruz (reprising his role in Out of Sight).

Literally no reason for this episode to exist. Didn't move the story forward at all.

3 episodes left, and I don't know what this series is supposed to be about.
I honestly thought that when the old black guy from Detroit was done telling his (pointless) story about Miles Davis that the younger white guy from Oklahoma was going to ask him, "Who's Miles?"

The best part of the episode was his daughter texting back that she didn't want to talk so we didn't have to see or hear her.

How is this 92% on RT?
I don't get it all. It says nothing new about Raylan, doesn't have an interesting story, interesting characters or cool villains. Why was it revived? What's "Justified" about it?
Such a disappointment.

Just 38 reviews overall, and likely from "critics" who were fans of Justified to begin with, and so eager to take a look at this new mini-series. So there was prejudice.
And they probably only had the first two episodes available for review, and were reacting positively to what they saw as promise versus what has been delivered.

It's as if they had everything in line for a revival but forgot to include a plot.

Wow! with the attorney. Least likely couple in the history of tv. Why is this show existing? Nothing has happened. Nothing. And, frankly don’t care how it ends, though I will continue. It’s just so disappointing. Justified was so unique and good. Stories upon stories with one big baddie who was amazing in Walton Goggins. This new guy, Boyd or whatever has the charisma of a tiger petting a gazelle. It’s so boring. With boring characters with lifeless demeanors. It’s all so generic. Too bad.

In order to produce more "Justified" TV, they stuck Raylan Givens into the story from a novel that was about Raymond Cruz in Detroit. When Raylan was working in Kentucky, he was a lawman, but he also had all these personal connections to the people around him. As a result, the stories and his character had more depth.
Here, he's just a visiting federal cop in Detroit. He doesn't know any of these people or have any connection with their lives. The show, following the novel, wants to draw out the backstories and connections of the Detroit characters, but this is an 8 episode mini-series about Raylan Givens, so we don't care about any of this Detroit stuff.
Also, there is no mystery or procedural to the main story. We know who killed the judge (and why). Raylan knows who killed the judge (but not why). Raylan has no proof, so he is just waiting the killer out. Ho-hum
