Untitled Exorcist Film (2027, D: Flanagan) S: Johansson
It was announced a while ago that these new films will be a trilogy, but they announced the title and date of the second film today.

The Exorcist: Deceiver, the second sequel in a new trilogy from director David Gordon Green, will get a wide release on April 18, 2025.
News of the 2025 release for the second chapter in The Exorcist franchise from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions follows the unveiling of the first trailer for The Exorcist: Believer screening in theaters last weekend behind screenings of Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer.
The first film in a planned trilogy, The Exorcist: Believer, will be released theatrically on Oct. 13. Also from director Green, the first chapter in the trilogy has Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) raising his daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett), after his wife’s death 12 years earlier. A chain of events force the father to confront the nadir of evil.
For the first time since 1973’s The Exorcist, Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn reprises her iconic role as Chris MacNeil in the new trilogy.

I was not thrilled with the new announcement. I was not thrilled with David Gordon Green being attached.
Why does this title intrigue the hell
out of me?!

Golden receiver better wrap up the trilogy on a strong note. I never knew this was going to be trilogy - definitely not a good thing.

EVERYTHING is a trilogy. I find it the most tired trend in film. It amazes me that EVERY story just coincidentally takes three parts to tell. [sarcasm]

People bitch about sequels yet they flock to the next Mission Impossible or John Wick movie.

Trust me, I'm probably one of the very few that loved all three of the new Halloween movies and it's not about whether people liked them or not, it's about a film like the Exorcist having a trilogy -it just doesn't need that treatment.

The movies you mentioned warrant sequels. An Exorcist movie doesn't. I'm not saying I'm against the idea, but it seems like Green struck some kind of deal with the powers that be to pump out trilogies of old films/characters.

"The Exorcist" may not have warranted a sequel, but I was curious. Sadly it was not the film anyone wanted or was expecting. And I still think it's the worst sequel ever made. "The Exorcist III" turned out to be miles better because it was loosely based on Blatty's "Legion". "The Beginning" though was garbage and "Dominion" was boring AF. I doubt "Deceiver" will be great, but has to be better than "The Heretic" and "Beginning"/"Dominion". And I'm pretty excited to see Burstyn reprise her role.
For me, it feels like the filmmakers lose focus when setting out for a trilogy from the start, It's just too much.

The plot of the new one should be Regan gets repossessed and plays hide and seek with Chris around her house.

Unfortunate the first got trashed. It didn’t feel great. But my engagement was on par with the better modern horror films from the respective Lin and Whannell-iverses.
I would have rather seen Green’s version end the story.

I had high expectations and was disappointed with the first one. Sounds like its likely due to scheduling conflicts since the date has now moved.

Whatever the reason for it I don’t mind the fact that David Gordon Green is out. His Halloween Trilogy wasn’t all that great. The first one was alright and the two sequels were pretty meh.
It made less sense for an Exorcist Trilogy to happen and while I have yet to see The Exorcist: Believer it sounds like it wasn’t very good and I feel like Green isn’t this horror guru that needs to get all these re-quel projects.

If I hadn’t seen the newest Halloween trilogy I might be disappointed by this news. I like DGG but the Halloween movies started out well enough with the first one and got progressively worse with each entry. The third movie was a putrid turd.
I’m ok with a new director taking over for this series. I didn’t hate the first Exorcist movie but it also wasn’t particularly great. DGG following the same template for this as he did for the Halloween movies had me worried.

I believe this gif fully sums up the DGG experience. Great set up, fantastic tricks, he's pulling it off . . . and then can't stick the landing of a movie or a series to save his life.

Renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Life of Chuck) is in talks to direct the next Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
Uni and Blumhouse declined comment. Should a deal make, Flanagan would take over the reins from David Gordon Green, who exited the rebooted franchise back in January. Universal and Blumhouse bought rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for $400M, and while the plan at that point was for at least three new films to be made, it’s unclear whether Flanagan would be on for more than one.
