Do DISCOUNT MOVIE THEATERS or SECOND-RUN THEATERS still exist where you live?

As theatrical movies pop up on digital format sooner and sooner these days, I wonder if those second-run movie theaters still exist in your community?

They have not in Kansas City for a very long time. We do have a few revival house theaters that play older movies but that's another topic entirely.

No. The only one we had closed over 25 years ago.

Re: Do DISCOUNT MOVIE THEATERS or SECOND-RUN THEATERS still exist where you live?

There was an easy to get to (by car or even RTD bus) Discount/Second-Run theater many years back off of Devonshire on Reseda Blvd in the Valley in Southern CA. There also used to be a Farrell's Ice Cream parlor near the theater, both now long gone but still missed by those of us that grew up in the valley.

I remember seeing Deep Impact at this theater, along with other films. Decent size screen, the seats were the same and as comfortable as they would be at any other theater (this was long before stadium seating became a thing), the only drawback was that the audio was not the greatest, not even as good as you would hear at non-THX theaters. The concessions were also discounted but the same as you would find at any first run theater. This was a fun theater to go to and get out of the sun and just enjoy your first or second viewing of a film. It really is missed and I would totally see a film at this theater when visiting my parents if it still existed.

I do not think Why So Blu lives (or lived) anywhere near this theater, but he might even know exactly what theater I am talking about.

No, I'm not too familiar with the Valley at all. Wow, the RTD before it was the MTA! I remember taking the RTD. lol

Nope, I believe the last one I saw in a discount was Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, and that was 2005.

A few where I live, and some that combine first run with older movies. Most of these also sell beer and food.

They're all gone. The last one in this area was rebuilt and replaced with a modern first-run theater a number of years ago.

The last one near me was a rundown Carmike, which got rebranded as AMC in 2017 and eventually became a first run theater. They did zero remodeling, so it remained seedy looking. They finally closed it for good at the start of the pandemic.

Nope. The last one in my area was owned by Regency Theatres and closed down around mid to late 2021 even when they slowly were getting people back from the pandemic. They only charged $3. The Regency company still operates 1st run theaters around So. Cal, Arizona and Hawaii.

Yeah, a Regency theater is relatively close to me. Haven't been to it since I caught Sorry To Bother You there pre-pandemic. I believe it's still open, though.

There was a second-run theater that I used to live by a few years ago.

Unfortunately, after being open for 20-years, they closed permanently in 2021.

I just don't see the point of them anymore. When I can get a digital copy of a movie for $19.99 or less, it doesn't make sense to spend money to watch a second-run film in a theater when I could pay a similar amount to watch it at home whenever I want and without dealing with the public.

No, the last one around here closed permanently during COVID.

We've still got a few in my area but I never go to them. I just checked the one a few minutes from my work and tickets are $3.50 and it's playing smaller new releases like The Machine and Blackberry plus classics like the original Star Wars trilogy and some old Pixar films.

Discount theaters... yes at least 3. ($8-$10 evening tix). Second run... not anymore. The only one I thought was left is now a discount theater instead of second run.

The last second-run theater in this area closed in 2018, and I don't think you can get into an evening movie around here for under $10 anymore without some sort of membership or promotion.

Nothing like that left in New York City--that I know of.

Our last one closed close to ten years ago. I still miss it.

Not really, but some of the drive-in theaters here still run older flicks on the cheap.

Depends ... AMC runs only new movies (with little variety despite 20 screens in the city) and charges full prices, but runs my local theaters like discount theaters.

We have one (that I'm aware of), $4 for all ages ($2 surcharge for 3D).

One theater near me regularly has showings of older movies, but they also have first-run showings of Searchlight Pictures-like films.

Tickets are the same for both, and they aren't discount.
