I liked the first two in the series and I’ll watch it for Wilson and Farmiga but, yeah, The Devil Made Me Do It was shit.

Michael Chaves, who directed the 3rd movie, is in talks to direct this one. And it will reportedly be the final film of the series.

EXCLUSIVE: Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinson have joined Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in New Line’s The Conjuring: Last Rites.
Wilson and Farmiga are reprising their roles as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in the Michael Chaves directed sequel. Chaves previously directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II. New Line’s Conjuring Universe counts $2.25B at the global box office.
The Conjuring films are based on the real-life case files of the Warrens. However, the exact case for The Conjuring: Last Rites is being held closely under wraps.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2; The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) wrote the screenplay with current revisions by writing team Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing (The Nun II) based on a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and James Wan. Wan is also returning to produce with Peter Safran; the duo behind every Conjuring movie including the latest release, The Nun II.
Hardy recently starred in the critically acclaimed drama Unicorns and Love at First Sight for Netflix opposite Haley Lu Richardson. His feature credits include Bohemian Rapsody as Queen drummer Roger Taylor and X-Men: Apocalypse as Angel.
Tomlinson is known for her roles in the Britbox series The Beast Must Die and the Netflix series The Lost Pirate Kingdom, and her depiction of Joan Rivers at the New Wimbledon Theatre. She has recently starred in Bandits, a short film from director Nick Alexander who went on to win Gold at the Cannes Young Director’s Awards.

It looks solid, and I hope the trailer did not give away half of the jump scares.

I really liked the first and second movie and some of the spin offs weren't that bad either, but I really hate, that they still play "the based on a true story" card. The Warrens aren't Ghostbusters, they are charlatans. The movies get less effective as a horror movie, if you try to tie them to "real events".

I just got back from an IMAX screening tonight. I thought it was good, but not great. It’s mostly by the numbers supernatural horror. Nothing really that crazy happens and if you’re a fan of the saga of the Warrens, they pretty much stick to a familiar formula. What elevates it IMO is the performances of Wilson and Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine. This story brings in a new supernatural element that ties into the past and the birth of their daughter. A dark force basically follows the Warrens into the 1980s.
They pretty much wrap things up in a nice and tidy bow. I would only recommend this if you’ve been a longtime fan of the franchise.
I give it a B- and maybe 3 out of 5. It’s really not something that I would feel the need to want to rewatch anytime soon. If you prefer edgier horror, you might find it boring. But Wilson and Farmiga made it worth the trip to bring this saga to a close.

I saw the trailer for this yesterday in a theater. Like most trailers these days, it gives no actors' names. I recognized Patrick Wilson, who hasn't aged much, but I'm stunned to learn that the actress is Vera Farmiga. I assumed that was Andie McDowell in the trailer.

According to IMDB, this is the SEVENTH time Vera Farmiga has played Lorraine Warren on-screen. If you were stunned it was her in the role, you were the only one.

My burning question is: In your opinion, is it better than the third film (The Devil Made Me Do It)? I'm not a fan of the director at ALL, considering that every movie of his that I've seen was awful. So if this one's better than Conjuring 3 and The Curse of La Llorona, I may give it a shot...but with a lot of trepidation.

I haven’t seen The Devil made me do it since it came out 4 years ago. So I can’t really give you a direct comparison
As I said, it’s mostly by the numbers supernatural horror. But I’ve liked Wilson and Farmiga’s portrayal of The Warrens and for me that was a good enough reason to see this and I enjoyed their work in this. The movie has a 56% on RT, so a little better than half of the critics who saw it liked it enough to give a recommendation and that’s a similar score to the previous movie.
It’s co-written by James Wan and the same writer of the previous movie.

A creepy old mirror is a terrible gift for a teenager.
A-list special...never would have seen it otherwise. Some of these have been watchable, but I found this one to be just way too long.

I’m a sucker for these movies. I even enjoyed the 3rd one. I had fun. Some good scares. Great design/ make up on the ghosts and demons. Of all the 10 or so movies in this universe id rank it right in the middle. The only thing that distracted me a little was the daughter and her boyfriend. Not because of their performances or anything, but I kept thinking throughout the movie that they were going to be set up as the new paranormal team that’s follows in her parents footsteps. I’m still not sure if they plan on doing that, but I hope not.

That is nuts. Especially for the fourth entry in a horror franchise and for a film that didn’t get super-enthusiastic reviews.
Warner had quite the Summer slate of successes.
