Eddington (2025, D: Aster) S: Phoenix, Stone, Butler, Pescal
Ari Aster‘s “Beau Is Afraid” isn’t even in theaters yet, but the “Midsommar” and “Hereditary” already has his fourth film lined up. World Of Reel has the scoop: Aster will start shooting his next movie, “Eddington,” this summer, with Joaquin Phoenix set to lead its ensemble cast. Also back? Cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, who’s shot all three of Aster’s features. But this news should come as no surprise to Aster fans. The director has mentioned “Eddington” several times since his rise to fame and even told a Reddit AMA four years ago (not the one he did earlier this week) that he’s had a script for it ready for years and even believed at one point it’d be his debut film. But what’s “Eddington” about? According to Aster, “it’s like a film noir ensemble western dark comedy.” That sounds right up his alley.
“There was a period of time when I thought “Midsommar” would be the debut feature, and there was a period when I thought another script called “Eddington” might be the first movie,” Aster said during the 2019 Reddit AMA. “For like five years, I was trying to get that Western-noir dark ensemble comedy going. That won’t be the next one, by the way, though I do still want to make it very badly. I made “Hereditary” first, but I always had “Midsommar” in my back pocket, like it was right there in me.”
Aster also said in a 2018 Reddit AMA for “Hereditary” that “Eddington” takes place in a fictional mining time in Arizona and would love to shoot the pic there. “Although it’s sort of a – I don’t know if you’d call it a revisionist western,” the director continued. “It’s contemporary; one foot is in the western and one foot is even more heavily in the noir genre. So it’s like a film noir ensemble western dark comedy.” Film noir and Westerns didn’t crossbreed often in each genre’s heydey, but plenty of films in the mid-late 1950s blended their sensibilities somewhat; John Sturges‘ “Bad Day At Black Rock,” for instance. Expect Aster to be up to his own thing with “Eddington,” though.
Aster hinted to The New York Times last month that his next film would “almost certainly” be a Western with Phoenix; so, safe to assume he’s talking about “Eddington.” And World Of Reel says Pogorzelski confirmed “Eddington” would start shooting this summer at a seminar last weekend at Nashville’s Belcourt Theatre. So expect Pogorzelski to be shooting for Aster again, too. The cinematographer also shot “Blue Beetle,” out later this year, and brought his signature look to other recent films like Mimi Cave‘s “Fresh” and Ana Lily Amirpour‘s “Mona Lisa And The Blood Moon.”
But was there anything of note in Aster’s more recent Reddit AMA? Well, he did say he’d like to adapt the board game “Don’t Wake Daddy” for the big screen—no idea how serious Aster is in that comment, but it’s something. As for who will join Phoenix in the “Eddington” ensemble, expect news on that as the film heads toward production.

It looks like Emma Stone, Pedro Passcal, and Candace Bergman will be involved.

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji (“Evita,” “Bardo”) is the director of photography.

Don't know what kind of movie this will be, but after seeing Warfare this past weekend it looks like this one will continue the tradition of A24 movies being something outside the box.

I’ve been wondering if you could make a commercial film dealing with the actual pandemic. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
I love all the creative chances Emma Stone has taken since first working with Yorgos. No more romcoms and Disney reboots for her.

^Cruella 2 seems to be in the works.
That teaser didn’t give us much but I’m not sure I see a Western vibes that were hinted at in the initial press releases about this movie.
I’m curious to see what Aster does around all the mass hysteria during COVID.

I noticed this amusing pic of a screen vehicle at IMDb:

And these blogs from last year have some other behind-the-scenes shots of redressed buildings and whatnot in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. It’s interesting to note in the second link that the anti-vax crowd already had their claws out in the comments.

I gathered from an interview or two that this is about the "two realities" that we experience in America. I guess that's my only input without adding this to the Film Politics forum. It's a subject that interests me greatly. I'll be there opening weekend.

This looks good, but also potentially a bit too close to home to be entertainment.

Yeah, looks like they're gonna give both sides of the Covid story even though this they won't make any money anyway at least they're not gonna stick to the one side so they're gonna get both sides that's good

I just watched Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde’s review on YouTube.
Bottom line, it’s over 2 1/2 hours and according to them, extremely boring. I might pass on this now.
I’ll need to see a few more reviews. I don’t really like the idea of a 2 1/2 hour Covid satire.

If there is one thing Aster can do well, it's turning his movie on a dime to the horrific. The first hour sorta dragged but an event happens that kicks this into gear and I was locked in the rest of the time. Astor absolutely skewers the craziness that happened during covid. The way people acted, the conspiracy theories, the protests, social media. It can probably be a lot for some people but you really have to give the guy credit for taking huge swings with his subject matter.

Sitting at 66% on RT and consensus seems "good , but not great". I have a pass subscription to a local theater and would actually be all about seeing this if it weren't for its 2 1/2 hour run time. I'm hesitant to take in longer movies that are just "good but not great", but I also like supporting cinema as an art, and Aster is definitely about such. He's also one of those filmmakers where love the result or hate it, he gets people talking.

Came across a tweet that said:
"First 50 min is dark political satire
Second 50 is absurdist crime thriller
Last 50 is neo-western action thriller"
I love this description.

I really felt betrayed by the final act of the movie.
For the first two hours, "boring" was the last word I would use to describe Eddington. It's funny, and filled with a great level of detail and observation. Scene after scene is filled with the kind of conflict that gets your blood pumping, almost wanting jump into the movie so you can start arguing your point of view.
"Goddam," I thought, "This is the best movie I've seen in a year."
I loved the first hour about the town's divide, I was riveted when it took a turn into crime/noir, but when it turned again into a mindless action shoot-out I was so disappointed to realize the movie wasn't going anywhere. What followed was a convoluted ending that just went on and on. Boy, the first two hours hummed along beautifully, but the last bit suddenly made it feel like I'd been sitting in the theatre for three hours, and all the brilliance had receded so far back in my memory I left feeling grumpy. That sucked.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure the cartoonist Dan Clowes has a cameo at the end, sitting beside Emma Stone in her last shot.

I largely agree, though I would still come down overall on the positive. The ending of the movie just goes off the rails, and while I'm pretty sure that was the point he was trying to make, knowing it was the point didn't make it any more effective.
