FOO FIGHTERS: But Here We Are - 6/2/23

Didn’t really know where to post this as nothing is out yet but the Foo Fighters YouTube page is teasing new music. So far just a couple of shorts. I’m curious if they’re actually working on a new album or just a new single. Also curious as to who they’re going to get for a permanent drummer.

Re: FOO FIGHTERS: But Here We Are - 6/2/23

Following a year of staggering losses, personal introspection and bittersweet remembrances, Foo Fighters return with But Here We Are, out June 2 on Roswell Records/RCA Records.

A brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters endured over the last year, But Here We Are is a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship and family. Courageous, damaged and unflinchingly authentic, But Here We Are opens with newly released lead single “Rescued,” the first of 10 songs that run the emotional gamut from rage and sorrow to serenity and acceptance, and myriad points in between.

Produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, But Here We Are is in nearly equal measure the 11th Foo Fighters album and the first chapter of the band’s new life. Sonically channelling the naiveté of Foo Fighters’ 1995 debut, informed by decades of maturity and depth, But Here We Are is the sound of brothers finding refuge in the music that brought them together in the first place 28 years ago, a process that was as therapeutic as it was about a continuation of life.

Tracklist

1. Rescued

2. Under You

3. Hearing Voices

4. But Here We Are

5. The Glass

6. Nothing At All

7. Show Me How

8. Beyond Me

9. The Teacher

10. Rest

Like the new song. Definitely has a classic Foo Fighters feel to it. Excited for the new album. I’d like to see them in concert again too. They were supposed to come near my area before the passing of Taylor Hawkins so hopefully that gets rescheduled eventually.

Huge Foo fan and the new song fell a bit flat for me. The rifs are decent but they're not capturing me like the older work. The last few albums have been more hit than miss but none of them measure up to the early work -- which I guess is typical for bands that gap generations. Still thrilled to have the guys back and I cannot wait to see them in concert again.

Re: FOO FIGHTERS: But Here We Are - 6/2/23

I need to listen to Concrete and Gold and Medicine at Midnight. I kind of fell out of listening to a lot of music and even though I’ve always really liked the Foo Fighters I just skipped those albums completely.

In my opinion the band kind of really hit their peak with Wasting Light. Just a really solid album that I listened to a bunch. I remember when Sonic Highways came out and at first I was a little disappointed in it but it grew on me.

I quite like the new song. Yes it's very generic, almost as if ChatGPT was asked to "Write a Foo Fighters song", but by the same token, it's melodic, has a solid song structure and some catchy riffs. No surprises or big leaps, that's for sure. I look forward to the new album this Summer.
Is Dave playing drums here?

I haven't seen an official statement, but the drums do sound 100% like Grohl's playing, more so than Hawkins'. I'm assuming that going forward, it'll be Grohl on drums in the studio, and they'll hire someone to play drums on tour.

At least for this first album without Taylor it probably does make sense if Dave is the one doing drums. Whether or not that’s the case I’m curious if that will be how it is going forward in the studio or if they’ll get a new permanent drummer.

Josh Freese has joined the band as their new drummer.

Foo Fighters Reveal New Drummer Josh Freese, Taylor Hawkins’ Successor

Following the death of Hawkins in 2022, the prolific session percussionist made his debut with the band during a livestream event

Evan MinskerMay 21 2023

Foo Fighters have announced that their new drummer is Josh Freese. Freese, session drummer who recently played with with the Offspring, follows in the footsteps of the band’s beloved late percussionist Taylor Hawkins, who died last year. The band revealed the news on Sunday (May 21) during their livestream Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts, a studio session recorded at the group’s 606 studios in Northridge, California.

Not including Dave Grohl, Freese is the third drummer to join Foo Fighters; before Hawkins, William Goldsmith performed on the band’s 1997 album The Colour and Shape.

The livestream opened with an extended bit where they teased that famous drummers would join the lineup. Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers (a friend of the late Hawkins) showed up to say he was being blocked in by a different car outside the studio. Tommy Lee popped in to deliver some takeout for the band. Tool’s Danny Carey showed up to drop off some dogs he apparently groomed for the group. The camera finally panned over to Freese, who expressed frustration that they hadn’t already started rehearsing.

Freese is a prolific session and touring drummer. As a session musician, he recently played on the new M83 and 100 gecs albums. Over the past decade, he’s contributed to new records by Lana Del Rey, Rob Zombie, Bruce Springsteen, A Perfect Circle, Sting (with Shaggy), and many more. He’s toured and recorded with Danny Elfman, was a member of Devo’s recent live lineups, and in the past, has been a member of Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, the Vandals, Weezer, and Sublime With Rome. During the livestream, Freese talked to Grohl about covering Top 40 hits in a band at Disneyland when he was 12.

Hawkins died at age 50 while on tour with Foo Fighters last year in Bogotá, Colombia. They canceled their remaining shows. The band returned to the stage for two all-star Hawkins tribute shows at the end of 2022. Freese performed with the band during those shows, and in a social media post, he said specifically requested to play Hawkins’ own set.

“Without hesitation I said, ‘Taylor’s drums need to be up there and I want to play on his exact set up,” he wrote. “‘I want THAT energy to be up on THAT stage. I want to sweat all over the same drums he was sweating all over every night...don’t change a thing.’” Freese and Hawkins didn’t grow up knowing each other, but had a connection as Orange County guys. “We always had that funny little bond and he'd always remind me that he was tired of hearing about ‘that other young guy from OC who was already making records and touring’ when he was a teenager. I’d then ask him if he wanted to trade bank accounts with me, LOL! Fuck man, the whole thing sucks. He would’ve loved that show more than anyone though.”

After seeing both Tribute shows, I was 100% behind Josh as "a" replacement. (This might just be for this tour...)...he killed it on the live stream and brought something new to the Foo. While I will miss T, Josh is a worthy successor.

Hearing good things about this album. Some reviews I’ve read make it sound like their best in a while.

Got the vinyl early yesterday. Pretty good stuff!
My early opinion is that it's their 3rd or 4th best album.

I'm not the biggest Foo Fighters fan but I do like them. With that said they absolutely nailed their new drummer choice - Josh Freese is a bad ass drummer - really f'n good. He was the drummer for Nine Inch Nails at one point and only left the band because he had a kid and was touring way too much.

Nice. To me their best albums I’ve listened to are:

The Colour and the Shape
In Your Honor
Wasting Light

I haven’t listened to Concrete and Gold or Medicine at Midnight yet.

To each their own but I thought Concrete and Gold was very generic and MAM was unlistenable.

I’d still like to listen to them at some point. There was a period where I just wasn’t listening to much new music in general and I just never got to those two albums. Still love the Foo Fighters though so I’ll eventually get the albums I’m missing and listen to them in full.

From what I’ve heard Concrete and Gold was kind of an experimental album and is more like a garage rock album from the 60s or 70s. Haven’t heard much about Medicine at Midnight.

A lot of people didn’t really like Sonic Highways and I thought it was a step down from Wasting Light but still enjoyed it.

Is it unrealistic to expect a band like Foo Fighters or Pearl Jam or Green Day or U2 or Radiohead to put out any album now that would rival their best ones? I just wonder if that is even possible now, in a post-MTV, post-commercial Rock era.

Wasting Light is considered by many fans to be there best, and it their 7th studio album. (this upcoming album is their 11th) So I would say yea, it's possible for high profile bands to deliver their greatest after a while.

I'd rank their top 5 like so..

1. Colour & Shape
2. Wasting Light
3. Nothing Left to Lose
4. [self-titled]
5. this new one!

(and honestly, I had Medicine at #5 before this new one)

After a listen and half, "Nothing At All" is probably my favorite off of this.

I can't decide if I love "Rest" or hate it. Leaning toward the former.

I was a huge Foo fan from 1995 to about 2006 or so.

this new one is one of the best things they’ve done in many years, IMO

good album start to finish
