I imagine this love-action “re-imagining” is going to focus on Maui over Moana anyway.

Has this ever happened before where the animated voice becomes the real-time character?

This one actually makes sense and especially because The Rock is going to be involved. It’s just a little weird given that the animated film isn’t very old yet.

Oh the casting is perfection in both the animated and live-action, but has it ever happened before?

I don't think I can remember a live action remake coming soon enough after an animated movie where the actors would still be appropriate. Certainly there have been like animated series that use the same voice actors as a live action movie. And the new Scott Pilgrim announcement is basically this but in reverse.

I read a comment on another site that said a live action remake isn't necessary, but how about a live action sequel instead?

I mean technically they were both animated, but James Earl Jones reprised his role as Mufasa in the "live action" Lion King.

Newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia will star as the titular character in the remake of the 2016 hit animated film. The 17-year-old actor hails from Sydney, Australia, and joins Dwayne Johnson in the feature, reprising his role as demigod Maui.

“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” said Laga‘aia in a statement. “My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”

I’m all for this. I love the animated and love the Rock, so bring it…

Is he in a muscle suit or has he been taking more roids than usual? I know she's a bit older than the character now, but I think it's kind of B.S. that they didn't cast Auli'i Cravalho as well. She's a dead ringer for the character.

I think Johnson came out recently and admitted it’s a muscle suit.

It's also a lot easier to take care of the tattoos on a suit

I know it’s just a brief glimpse but it looks like a shot-for-shot remake of the original like the recent How to Train You Dragon.

I love the CGI movie and this one will make a lot of money but it’s also completely pointless from a creative aspect.

Basically it just looks like a cartoon. “Live action”, yeah right. Slathered in so much bad CGI it’s essentially animated.

Cravalho is 24 now and is also an EP on the new film. Catherine Laga'aia is 18, so closer to the actual character's age.

And Cravalho has said that she wanted to step aside and give another actor a chance, which I think is great.

Although it looks like they aged baby Moana up a year or two.
