Nine years ago, Universal released a supernatural action comedy called R.I.P.D.: Rest in Peace Department, which didn’t do much at the box office despite starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. Made on a budget somewhere in the $150 million range, R.I.P.D. only earned $78.3 million worldwide. It was considered a bomb… but that hasn’t stopped Universal from making a direct-to-video sequel. Made completely under the radar, the sequel is called R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned – and it has already been screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association, earning a PG-13 rating for “sequences of violence, language, disturbing images and some crude/sexual references“.
According to IMDb, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned was directed by Paul Leyden (Chick Fight) from a screenplay he wrote with Andrew Klein (Blood, Frets & Tears). Since the film was made in secrecy, a plot synopsis hasn’t made its way online yet.
We do know that Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges didn’t come back for the sequel. The cast listed on IMDb includes Richard Fleeshman (The Sandman), Jake Choi (Single Parents), Kerry Knuppe (Hollywood), Stephanie Levi-John (The Spanish Princess), Craige Els (Doctor Who), Tilly Keeper (EastEnders), Nick Wittman (Mars), Gábor Perei (The Last Kingdom), Rachel Adedeji (Hollyoaks), Robert Jackson (Outside the Wire), Gergo Borbas (The Teacher), Máté Bede-Fazekas (Halo), and newcomer Evlyne Oyedokun.

The franchise will go from a $130mil+ budget on the first to probably around $5mil.

I thought the first one was fun, nothing great. I would have come back for a sequel if it had Bridges and Reynolds in it.

I enjoyed the first one too. I'll have to rewatch the 3D version before this one.

So this is Universal taking one of their long line of IPs again like Inside Man, Backdraft and Jarhead and making another straight to video sequel.

Can't really remember the original but a direct to video sequel can be watched if on one of the platforms I already have.

I actually didn’t hate the first one for what it is, but what a random sequel seeing as the first didn’t exactly do great.

I saw the first on home video or when it first hit HBO or one of the premium cable channels and it was actually fun to watch, but color me surprised that nearly a decade after the first film was released we are getting a DTV sequel. Of course, when it hits the streamers I subscribe too I too will give the sequel a watch.

I loved the 1st RIPD. I'm in. Would love a crossover with MiB since that's basically what it is but with Ghosts instead of Aliens.

I'll admit that I'm a little nostalgic for that time from 2005-2015 where they cranked out DTV stuff like S. Darko and Starship Troopers 2 & 3. They did it before that time and since, but at least everyone understood they were awful and they were generally not attempts to actually build a franchise or "universe", just cheap, quick cash grabs.

The Wild West has gone to Hell, literally, and the world’s best hope of being saved lies in the gun-slinging hands of Sheriff Roy Pulsipher (Jeffrey Donovan) as he becomes the newest officer for the Rest In Peace Department (R.I.P.D.) enforcing the afterlife’s laws. If the Old West was wild while he was alive, wait until Roy sees how weird it gets once he dies. Roy thought joining the R.I.P.D. would give him a chance to revisit his daughter and solve the mystery of his murder. Instead, he has his holsters full with havoc and hellfire when he’s given a mission to stop a dangerous demon from opening a portal to the underworld. The fate of the living and the dead now depends on Roy and his partner Jeanne (Penelope Mitchell), a mysterious swordswoman, as cowboys clash with creatures and undead insanity unleashes apocalyptic chaos.

Initially I had zero interest in this. But Jeffrey Donovan will get me to watch. Since these Universal DTV titles usually hit Netflix, I’ll wait until it’s available there.
