The Electric State (2025, D: Russo Bros.) S: Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt - Netflix
After nearly half a year of negotiations, Netflix has closed a deal for the next big-budget movie from Joe and Anthony Russo.
The duo, known for the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame mega-blockbusters, will direct The Electric State for the streaming giant, a move that reunites them with the company behind their current project, action movie The Gray Man, which debuts in July.
Millie Bobby Brown, the breakout star of Netflix’s Stranger Things, is on board to star in the feature, with Chris Pratt, who appeared in the Russos’ Avengers movies, in talks to join her.
Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, longtime Russo scribes who worked on Gray Man as well as the Avengers pics, are writing the script.
The cost isn’t cheap. The project was previously set up at Universal, which eventually balked at the price tag and put it into turnaround. The new budget is north of $200 million, according to sources.
The story centers on an orphaned teenager (Brown) who traverses an American West that is reminiscent of a retro-future with a sweet but mysterious robot and an eccentric drifter in search of her younger brother.
The project adapts the acclaimed 2018 illustrated novel by Simon Stalenhag, the writer-artist who also created Tales From the Loop.
Producing are the Russos via their AGBO banner, along with the company’s co-founder, Mike Larocca. Chris Castaldi and Patrick Newall are also producing. Executive producing are Angela Russo-Otstot, Jake Aust, Geoff Haley, Markus and McFeely.
Production is slated to begin in October in Atlanta.
The Russos are repped by CAA and Greenberg Glusker, while Brown is repped by WME and Hansen Jacobson.

Millie Bobbie Brown must have some incriminating photos of Netflix’s CEO or something.

I assume Chris Pratt will do that "supermodel smize" with his eyes that he uses to show his character is serious and not in a comedy?

200m+ budget for a direct to streaming movie and people wonder why the industry is in shambles.

OR something for sure. Probably to bury a potential lawsuit.
And that looks horrible.

Does MBB get to be considered a Movie Star if she never stars in any theatrically released movies?

I'm intrigued with this - it looks more visually interesting than most movies we see. I like the Russos and Markus and McFeely as writers and it seems to be sticking pretty closely to the graphic novel it's based on, at least in how it looks:

Amazon released a one season series called "Tales from the Loop" back in 2020. This story is also part of that story. It's from a Swedish fellow named Simon Stalenhag -- he's also a visual effects designer and works in the industry. The series of books he's written and illustrated/designed have all gotten rave reviews:

As for whether streaming movies count as the kind of movies that make people Movie Stars, that was the question. It certainly would be a new paradigm for that century-old expression.

I mean, okay. But they don't just put randoms from the street in these movies because Godzilla is the 'star".
Streaming has changed the game completely. This would have easily been a big-screen movie just a few years ago. But it must make more sense to stream it instead. I still think that makes these people movie stars.

If your answer is that Brown is a Movie Star, then fine. That's what I was asking, not if she has had big parts in movies, or even leading roles in movies.

MBB isn't a "movie star"; she simply doesn't put asses in seats. You could have put, say, Sydney Sweeny or Jenny Ortega in those Godzilla movies with the same net result. Personally I don't think she's all that good an actor but others differ as apparently she's the highest paid cast member on Stranger Things. Somehow. I think she's completely replaceable in everything I've seen her in
I absolutely LOVED Tales From The Loop. Probably the best new science fiction series since Black Mirror, maybe. Thoughtful, contemplative, ruminating, haunting, and beautiful. So of course it didn't do that well. We'll probably never get a second season, but that's probably for the best; the first season wrapped up perfectly and satisfyingly. I had no idea this project was derived from Stalenhag's artwork. I had no interest before but now I'm so in.

Actually we should . It does affect what other potential projects can get made, it does affect the cost of subscriptions and it’s nice to hear how much they throw at these projects. For example, ask Disney how they felt the $180 million they throwaway on the acolyte felt.
.
Could be. I think it’s fair to give things a chance but that seems like an awful lot of money for something like this.
Good question. She doesn’t seem to be the draw that’s required. Celebrity draw isn’t even as much of a thing as it used to be. So, add her to this equation and you can see why she hasn’t been at the helm of a major motion picture.
Tv isn’t movies though. Getting people to a theater is much harder than having them try out a show on a streaming service they are subscribed to anyways. MBB just isn’t that much of a draw. She’s damned cute though.
Agree on MBB. In stranger things she did a great nosebleed and scream but that’s about it. For two seasons that’s all we got. She stared at people too. Sorry, just not seeing the draw here. She could have been replaced by a lot of others in that show. I stopped watching about halfway through season 3 as it got horribly awful and boring anyways.

I don't have any hard data to back this up, but I was under the impression that Millie Bobby Brown is massively popular/influential with the under-25 crowd and is basically Netflix's biggest homegrown "star". Not saying that makes her a "movie star" or that this movie will be any good, but I think people here underestimate her value.

Netflix doesn't put her in all those movies because of blackmail. They've probably analyzed the viewership data and came to the conclusion that Millie Bobby Brown is a draw for their audience. That doesn't make her a Movie Star, but at least a Netflix Star.

I mean how many "movie stars" by that definition are there? Seems like changing the goalposts from "stars in a theatrical movie" to "puts butts in seats" and there are a lot more of the former than the latter. Why are we talking about this anyway, was she terrible in this or something?
