Back to Black (2024, D: S. Taylor-Johnson) S: Marisa Abela - Amy Winehouse biopic

EXCLUSIVE: Following years of Hollywood working on getting a biopic of Amy Winehouse off the ground, Sources tell Deadline Studiocanal is gearing up to make Back to Black, a new film about the life of the Grammy wining singer who tragically passed in 2011 with Fifty Shades of Director Sam Taylor-Johnson directing. The script has been written by Matt Greenhalgh and the project is now moving fast following Taylor-Johnson boarding the pic. Studiocanal is producing with Alison Owen and Debra Hayward alongside Tracey Seaward.

The film is expected to take a look at the life and music of Winehouse who started off as a budding North London jazz singer to eventually becoming a Grammy-winning music superstar with hit records that included Rehab and Back To Black. Her life would eventually be cut short in 2011 at age 27 following a long battle with alcohol and drugs

Following her death in 2011, Hollywood has since tried to tell her story with various projects going into development including one from Lotus Entertainment with Noomi Rapace attached to star but ultimately none moving forward. While a feature film has yet to make it into production, the 2015 A24 doc Amy was a huge success ultimately winning the Oscar for best documentary.

This pic is being made with full support from the Amy Winehouse estate and producers and Taylor-Johnson will begin their search for the individual who will take on the role of Winehouse in the weeks to come.

Taylor-Johnson is best known for helping launch the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise after directing the first film to box-office glory. That film would go on to gross $569 million at the global box-office. She most recently worked on the Amazon series Solos.

She is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

I have a casting idea. How about Halsey? I'm not sure if she can act, but looking online, I guess she's doing something currently with Sydney Sweeney for HBO. She can certainly look the part, and can sing.

I think she could pass for this

How about Sara Bareilles? Looks like she’s done some acting on Broadway.

I’m guessing Lady Gaga is on the short list.

Gaga is amazing, but she's 36, Sara is 42. Winehouse died at 27 (admittedly an old, old 27). Halsey is 27.

Gary Busey was 34 when he played Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story. Holly's age at death: 21.
Lou Diamond Phillips was 25 when he played Ritchie Valens in La Bamba. Valens' age at death: 17

Just sayin', there's precedent...

Sure, 35-40 years ago. Last year, Ben Platt at 27 played Dear Evan Hanson, a senior in high school. It didn't go so well.

Better to go with an unknown / up-and-comer.

re: Back to Black (2024, D: S. Taylor-Johnson) S: Marisa Abela - Amy Winehouse biopic

Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” is close to securing its lead.

Multiple sources tell Variety that Marisa Abela, one of the stars of HBO and BBC drama “Industry,” is a frontrunner to play Winehouse. It’s believed Abela is in discussions, though the role isn’t yet locked in and a small group of other actors are also believed to be in the mix.

As previously reported, the role was always intended to go to a newcomer, and producers have been keen to hire a fresh face rather than go down the pop-star casting route.

The scene-stealing Abela plays the privileged but troubled Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the sexy, London-set financial thriller “Industry,” which returns next month for Season 2. The 25-year-old British actor also starred in Sky TV series “COBRA” and appears alongside James Norton in the crime thriller “Rogue Agent” (previously titled “Freegard”). She also appears in the forthcoming drama “She Is Love,” opposite Haley Bennett and Sam Riley.

A 2019 graduate of London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Abela recently joined the cast of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” although, like most things relating to the movie, the specifics of her role are still unclear.

Abela — whose background is Maltese, Libyan, Russian and Polish — is of Jewish heritage, which has been important to the creative team behind the movie, in order to be as authentic as possible to Winehouse’s own background.

The Brighton-born actor hasn’t been known as a singer in any of her film and TV credits so far, but her RADA profile indicates that she can indeed sing, and is an alto — a lower vocal register that’s in line with Winehouse’s own extraordinary range.

“Back to Black” is directed by “Nowhere Boy” helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson. A script for the movie, written by Matt Greenhalgh, has been circulating, and casting has been underway for some time. The film is believed to be a passion project for Taylor-Johnson, who was a close friend of Winehouse’s.

Greenhalgh previously collaborated with Taylor-Johnson on “Nowhere Boy” and also wrote “Control,” the critically acclaimed biopic about the late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. European studio Studiocanal is producing with Alison Owen and Debra Hayward alongside Tracey Seaward.

Winehouse, best known for hit songs such as “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good,” died at 27 of alcohol poisoning in 2011. She produced two albums, “Frank” and “Back to Black,” the latter of which earned her six Grammy awards.

“Back to Black” has the full support of Mitch Winehouse, the late singer’s father, who was portrayed in a negative light in the Oscar-winning documentary “Amy.” Mitch Winehouse also participated in the 2021 BBC documentary “Reclaiming Amy,” which marked the 10-year anniversary of Amy’s death.

Producers Owen and Hayward have been attached to the Winehouse biopic for a number of years. The Winehouse estate first signed a deal for the movie back in 2018, though an earlier script was originally penned by “Kinky Boots” writer Geoff Deane.

Back in 2018, Mitch Winehouse denied suggestions that Lady Gaga might sign on to play the troubled singer. “I wouldn’t mind betting it would be an unknown, young, English — London, cockney — actress who looks a bit like Amy,” he told British tabloid The Sun at the time.

“What we want is somebody to portray Amy in the way that she was…the funny, brilliant, charming and horrible person that she was. There’s no point really me making the film because I’m her dad. But to get the right people to do it, that’s very important, and we will.”

Abela is represented by WME in the U.S. and The Artists Partnership in the U.K.

My biggest problem with these music biopics as they seem too upbeat and will gloss over the drinking and drug use that led to her death.

This is a family-authorized biopic, but come on, this is the Amy Winehouse story. There's literally no way to gloss over it.

Imagine making a Kurt Cobain movie but not showing that he was a depressed heroin addict who killed himself. That's what these biopics feel like.

Experience the life behind the lyrics. Marisa Abela is Amy Winehouse in Back to Black, only in theaters May 17.

The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame. Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.

Seems like they could manage to gloss over it.

Ouch 38%. The reviews appear to be mostly international critics.

I was never a fan of Winehouse. But, it was sad that she died so young due to her addictions. I thought her story could make a potentially interesting movie.

A Saturday afternoon A-list special. You'd have to be a pretty big fan of Winehouse to take much of anything from this movie. During the scene where her grandmother told Amy that she was dying of cancer I thought of "the Room" and laughed.

This is available to watch on Peacock starting today.

Hope this does not stall or pause Marisa Abela's career since she is so hot.

From what little I know of her this seemed to capture one part of her personality and life well it just didn’t care about capturing any others. There is 10 times as many laughs in either of her albums as there is this movie and it’s 3 to 4 times longer than either of them. Given how her story ends I can see it being tough to play her as too much of a clown but she was a genuinely funny person.

I was never a fan but I did not think this was bad or horrible and it did cover her drug problems and not gloss over them and now I have more respect for her talent since when she was living I thought she was maybe over-hyped by the media as one of the greatest singers of all-time.

The Nick Cave song in the closing credits was really sad
