Beast (2022, D: Kormákur) S: Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley
Beast - Only In Theaters August 19
Sometimes the rustle in the bushes actually is a monster.
Idris Elba (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, The Suicide Squad) stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator.
Elba plays Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with their daughters to a game reserve managed by Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley, Russian Doll series, Maleficent), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of blood-thirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them.
Iyana Halley (The Hate U Give, This is Us series) plays Daniels’ 18-year-old daughter, Meredith, and Leah Sava Jeffries (Rel series, Empire series) plays his 13-year-old, Norah.
From visceral, experiential filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, the director of Everest and Universal Pictures’ 2 Guns and Contraband, Beast is produced by Will Packer, the blockbuster producer of Girls Trip, the Ride Along franchise, and ten movies that have opened No. 1 at the U.S. box office, including Night School, No Good Deed and Think Like a Man, by James Lopez, president of Will Packer Productions, and by Baltasar Kormákur. The film is written by Ryan Engle (Rampage, Non-Stop) from an original story by Jaime Primak Sullivan and is executive produced by Jaime Primak Sullivan and Bernard Bellew.

So, it's like Cujo with a pissed-off lion. Idris is everywhere.

The Ghost and the Darkness + Rogue + possibly supernatural lion? Sounds pretty cool

I have never seen it (Jaws 4) but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built and it is terrific.

For 15 years now, I'm certain Idris Elba should be the next big thing, but he still is the actor who could be the next big thing. In the MCU he's a minor character, in Prometheus we was just a guy in the ensemble, he great in Pacific Rim, but still in a supporting role. In Star Trek Beyond he's not even recognizable.
So even when he's in a big movie he's never the lead, regardless of the quality of the movie. He's the lead in stuff like No Good Deed, Takers, Obsessed or Beast.
The Dark Tower could and should have been big, but due to the movie's quality wasn't, what remains is The Suicide Squad, which isn't much in 15 years of being on the cusp of a breakthrough. Of course Luther was a steady companion over all those years, but I doubt, the movie will change anything.
I just want more for him, he's got such a great presence on screen.

Decent survival creature feature. Pretty straight forward, but I was entertained. There is some really great camerawork that makes the film feel engaging and bigger than it actually is.

Fun movie, and although the CGI lions aren't perfect, they are more realistic compared to the animals in RRR.
Since I knew the jeep scene was coming because of the trailers, I chuckled when the film foreshadowed it by having the daughter wearing a Jurassic Park T-shirt.
I also enjoyed the fluid camera work, but then I started wondering if it was intended to emulate the way the "camera" works in modern day video games.

Yeah I thought it was entertaining. Pretty standard man vs beast survival thriller. For a CGI creation, the lion did look good for the most part. There were some close ups where you could tell he wasn't real. But, there was some decent tension.
The 2 girls were good as Elba's daughters. They weren't annoying or pouty. Elba had good chemistry with them. I read that Elba's daughter tried to audition, but was turned down because she lacked chemistry with him.
A watchable B movie. Not a bad way to kill about 90 minutes on a weekend. Not something that I ever plan to own, but it didn't suck.

This movie was only decent for me. Why everyone continues to stroke Elba's dick I'll never understand. He isn't a bad actor, per se, but I just don't see why everyone and their momma wants to fan cast him in every movie being made. The CGI lions weren't that bad, but some things in the movie made no sense, such as the lion tracking them when they finally drove miles away from where they were stranded.
This was a perfectly serviceable creature feature with lions in the jungles of Africa. I won't ever purchase it on Blu-Ray, unless it's really cheap. Still, it was fun and harmless.

Elba is loved because of The Wire. People connect. Same reason I’ve grown to anticipate and appreciate Ron Howard’s work - Arrested Development is in muh heart.

Oh my god! How did they keep this under wraps?! And here we all thought Prey was the secret Predator movie!
What? It's not a Predator movie? Hmm. Thought for sure that is where the trailer was going to go.

Saw this a few days ago.
A bit tame and predictable but you do get to see Idris Elba punch a CGI lion

This was ok. Too much CGI with the Lions. And that ending was beyond absurd, especially Elba’s condition. I thought that was beyond stupid, but not a bad little thriller.

I thought this was ok. The best thing about this movie were the extended camera shots. So not entirely “one shot” scenes, but those long scenes without editing cuts were impressive.

I don't regret watching this movie, but I don't ever want to see it again. It was the lite beer version of The Ghost and the Darkness. However, the ending was stupid and should have concluded
I did dislike the daughters, particularly the older one. I get youngsters do stupid shit, but Hollywood has a habit of envisioning kids and teens as borderline retarded, given how unbelievably idiotic they tend to have them behave in movies. One or two dumb decisions I can buy, but facepalm stupidity like
