Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (2025, D: Reiner)
The sequel will be in the style of Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz,” the legendary concert documentary that followed the farewell tour of the Canadian American rock group The Band. “Spinal Tap 2” will also feature real-life musicians in the film. No names have been revealed yet, but it will likely depend on the artists’ touring schedules.

Not much of a fan of comedy sequels usually, but this is Spinal Tap. Sure, I'm interested.

I’ve actually never seen the original all the way through. I always seem to just catch bits and pieces of it. I’ve never thought what little bits I saw were laugh out loud funny but I did find it all very well done and very clever.
If this actually gets made, I’ll have to finally get around to watching the first one all the way through.

There’s already been a Spinal Tap 2, “The Return of Spinal Tap,” which everyone seems to have forgotten about! It’s been years since I saw it and it was vaguely underwhelming as I recall, but really this would be Spinal Tap 3 if it ever happens.

See, I don't agree with that. Here's why : The problem with most comedy sequels is that they feel very inorganic. The point of most comedy movies is to put very different characters together and see what happens when they interact. When you do that, it feels very forced to put the same characters in a sequel so they interact again, and when they do, it's never as funny (see : The Hangover, Part 2, Ghostbusters 2, Another 48 Hours, Coming 2 America, Jewel of the Nile).
Here though, it makes total sense that the band would still be together and out touring to smaller and smaller audiences. Not saying that it will be amazing, but it could work. And Christopher Guest deserves the benefit of the doubt here as he's made several different mocumentaries since that are all at very least good and funny. This could work.

But you can’t make perfect even more perfect. I love Reiner and the band, but this could really go wrong. History of sequels prove that as you’ve stated. So so few sequels are better than the originals.

So are we just going to ignore The Return of Spinal Tap?
The first one is my all-time favorite comedy. The first one with the in-character dvd commentary is my second all time favorite comedy. Even if this new one is not as good (how could it possibly be?) I get so much joy out of just watching those guys riff off each other. That's what makes this more appealing than some other more tightly scripted comedy getting a sequel many years after the fact. It's really just a bunch of funny dudes being funny in the moment. I've gotten something out of just about every single in-character appearance they've ever done. I assume this will be no different. Plus this will hopefully get us an updated version of the original on disc.

Wasn't "The Return of Spinal Tap" a TV special or something? It wasn't a feature film.
Ahh. According to Wikipedia:
Either way, This Is Spinal Tap is a Top 20, maybe a Top 10 movie for me. It's lightning in a bottle. I love the characters though, and the actors/writers are certainly talented and accomplished enough. They have nothing to prove.
I hope it's good, but I wouldn't even be cautiously optimistic.
Ahh. According to Wikipedia:
- A two-hour, made-for-TV sequel, The Return of Spinal Tap, was broadcast and released on video in 1992 to promote Break Like the Wind. It consisted mostly of footage from an actual Spinal Tap concert at the Royal Albert Hall. In it the "Stonehenge" joke from the original movie is referenced, as the new, large prop is instead too big to get into the venue.

I can't really think of this movie as a sequel because the band has really taken on a life of its own since the first movie came out. Spinal Tap is more than a just a movie. They're a real band.
One of my hopes for the sequel would be that it has cameos from a lot of real life artists and bands, maybe doing a sort of Behind the Music where real artists would tell stories about touring with Spinal Tap, and other experiences with the band, really blurring the fourth wall.

I was wondering what the chances were of Viv Savage and Rick Shrimpton (twin brother of Mick Shrimpton) joining the new movie.
That's when I discovered Ric Parnell died just a few days ago. Bummer.

Paul McCartney and Elton John are set to appear in the upcoming sequel to This Is Spinal Tap.
Rob Reiner, who directed the original 1984 mockumentary film starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, confirmed various guest stars in the sequel during an appearance on Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast.
Speaking on the podcast about the sequel, which was announced in May last year, Reiner said: “We’re going to start shooting in the end of February.
“Everybody’s back. Paul McCartney is joining us, and Elton John. And a few other surprises, Garth Brooks.”
Along with directing the sequel, Reiner is set to reprise his role as filmmaker Marty DiBergi. McKean, Guest and Shearer will all return as the fictional metal band, comprised of David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls respectively.
Speaking about the sequel to NME in May last year, Reiner said: “We never thought we would do a sequel. It was only because we started to talk to each other and we came up with an idea we think might work – we don’t know it will. We’re going to try. The bar is incredibly high. We debated whether or not we should do it… I said, ‘Look at us, we’re all in our 70s. How much time are we going to have [left] to have some fun?’”
Regarding the plot, the sequel looks set to see DiBergi shoot a second film for the band in a bid for redemption.
“Marty DiBergi was roundly criticised by the band members for having done a hatchet job, [but] he’s going to be doing the second film,” Reiner told NME. “Marty has not been that successful [since]. I think he made Kramer vs Kramer vs Godzilla, which didn’t do very well. It was a threesome, and they were all in love… and, unfortunately, Godzilla crushed the other two, so it didn’t work.”
The sequel to This Is Spinal Tap was originally slated to be released in March 2024 to coincide with the original film’s 40th anniversary. With filming set to begin in February, however, it’s unclear when the sequel will be released.

Hollywood just can't leave shit alone. I expect this to be as amazing as Blues Brothers 2000 which is why I will never watch it. We also don't need The Princess Bride Vs. Mars Attacks incase Hollywood is wondering.
