F9: The Fast Saga (Fast and Furious 9) -- (2021, D: Lin) -- S: Diesel, Cena -- The Reviews Thread

Dom Toretto is living the quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, but they know that danger always lurks just over the peaceful horizon. This time, that threat forces Dom to confront the sins of his past to save those he loves most. His crew soon comes together to stop a world-shattering plot by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they've ever encountered -- Dom's forsaken brother.

Trailer:

Running Time: 2 hours, 25 minutes.

Budget: No official numbers released, but it's assumed to be $200M plus

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/f9

RT score: 64% as of 6/23/21

Justin Lin returns to direct after taking the last 2 movies off. He has a writing credit on this one.

This opens Friday, but screenings start tomorrow. Might as well get this going. Seeing it tomorrow at 7:15pm.

General consensus from what I've seen is this is the most insane and absurd of the series.

So far F9 has made about $292M worldwide

Alright, I just got back from seeing it. I gave it 3 stars and probably a C+

It's definitely not the worst of the series. That crown still belongs to 2 Fast 2 Furious.

It was good seeing Dominic Toretto and company back together again. But, I did feel like something was lacking without Dwayne Johnson. The action sequences and special effects were good, but very over the top. . This cast still has good chemistry. Tej and Roman were still very entertaining. I don't know why they brought back Sean. I thought the way he was used here was stupid.

I will say this that the story is pretty dumb and a lot of it makes zero sense. It's like a bad James Bond story. Also, the way they explain how Han was resurrected made absolutely no sense. I was like Huh? Also, the space sequence was so stupid.

But, I will say I was never bored. Justin Lin knows how to make an entertaining movie even with a weak script. Jacob Toretto ended up being a lame villain. Just some misunderstandings between him and Dom. He ended up being just a pawn for Cypher.

I was surprised to see Shaw in the mid-credits scene and then Han shows up. I wonder if that will be addressed in FX or Hobbs and Shaw 2. Shaw did say he needed to atone for his sins.

Yeah expectations will need to be lowered for all movies this year but that is not horrible.. I tried to go today but didn't purchase a ticket in advance and only crappy font row seats were left so I passed. Sunday will be the day...

If this makes $150-200M in the states, that will be a huge success considering the circumstances and not having Dwayne Johnson. The last movie made $226M in the states. The vast majority of it's revenue came from overseas.

I honestly don't think Johnson makes or brakes this series...It did fine without him until his 15 minutes of part 5. His career is OWED to this however. He only took off after.

Jesus Christ....the writers just truly don't give a fuck anymore do they? I mean for real now, they didn't before either...but the absurdity of this one was just stunning. I'm looking forward to Screen Rant's pitch meeting of this movie.

They need to bring Chris Morgan back to wrap it up.

Morgan wrote Hobbs and Shaw 2 years ago, but on his IMDB he has multiple Producer and Writer projects in the works or in development. He probably wasn't available for this one. Not sure if he's going to be available for 10.

Diesel did say the other day when interviewed on The Today Show that 10 is the last one even though I read there was talk of 2 more.

It was crazy and I loved it.

My son and I went and he was reading Reddit and they were like “fuck it, time travel, dinosaurs, they have to race Hitler”. What a wild series

I felt like this was a work of fan fiction. Cram everything and the kitchen sink as well as try to tie everything and everyone together. I half expect, with the explanation of Han's fake death, that Gisele will return in the next one. This was over the top stupid fun tho. I was laughing throughout the film at just how ridiculous it's become. Again, as Roman kept asking, how did you survive the explosion, the explanation doesn't fit the mid-credit scene.

Also, with the inclusion of the Jurassic World trailer at the beginning, I was about to lose my shit if, thru the dino montage, there was Dom driving the Charger between the brontosaurs... because time travel!

I thought it was pretty good for what the series has become. But you absolutely have to go in knowing there is going to be shit so ridiculous that it wouldn't even fly in a cartoon.
I do wish they had kept the series at least somewhat grounded, but that went out the window a long time ago.

I liked how they tried to tie everything together... and magically it fucking worked. At least for me, this was super entertaining. I'm looking forward to watching this again and I might go again to the movies. Been a long time since I've watched a movie twice at the movies. lol

Yeah this was pretty damn good and worth the wait. Was it the best? No but I liked how it tied things together almost like this was intended to be the last one. Was there only a mid-credit scene or one at the end as well? I only stayed for the Shaw reveal. Pretty sure Han and Shaw were in on it together...

Spoiler:
But if they were both working for Mr. Nobody, why would Han still allow Shaw to go after Dom and the crew? Even Shaw looked a little surprised to see Han alive, if he was supposedly in on it. That's not quite the way to recruit Dom if you try to blow him up in F7.

I can't even fathom why anyone would complain about the space sequence. Amazing. And bringing back the Tokyo Drift crew was great. They finally get to go to a barbecue! If they can get Ja Rule back for the finale, I will bow down to this series until the end of time.

If there's anything to complain about it's the endless Toretto family flashbacks. No one cares. More muscle cars racing through the jungle please. Thought Cena was kind of a zero as well. He's no Hobbs or Shaw.

Oh shit, it’s been so long since I’ve seen Tokyo Drift that I completely forgot that was Lil Bow Wow and Jason Tobin was also in it as well. I didn’t catch that connection at all.

I was like.. oh yeah, Lil Bow Wow isn't so little anymore that I thought it was a different person they recast. I do wish there was a better reunion with Han and Sean. I assume that Sonny Chiba dies and Brian Tee takes over which is why that crew left for Germany and I guess things didn't work out with Neela.

The only reason we have 9 of these is that they made that pivot. For me, this series became must-watch after the safe sequence in the fifth movie. After that, I want something bigger in the next movie every time.

I will say I had heard that the ending sequence of this one was bonkers and the person who said that also said he didn't know how it could be topped - it was great, but I maintain the sub fight in Fate of the Furious has yet to be topped in over-the-top-ness. The Rock kicked a torpedo in that one.

I avoided this last weekend because of some of the horrible buzz it got...but I still wanted to see it, so I did last night...and had a blast. This was the first movie I've seen in the theater in about 18 months and it's exactly the kind of movie that makes going to the movies fun. Is the plot preposterous? Of course it is...but it was never boring and the film had a lot of heart. It's pure fun.

Also - be sure to stay for the post-credits scene. I was the only one left in the theater (granted, there weren't many people there on a Thursday night) and was glad I stuck around.

No formal review from me, but I saw it with a free coupon today, and was adequately entertained. 3 lightsabers out of 5, max.
