Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024, D: Kenji Kamiyama) - Anime movie

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/mo...up-1234965985/

Titled The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, the stand-alone feature will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama, an anime veteran who last directed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series, and produced by Joseph Chou.

Set 250 years before the events in the movie trilogy, it will cover an untold story about Helm's Deep.

Jackson is not involved but has apparently given his blessing.

This is separate from the Amazon series which is set in the Second Age of Middle Earth (LOTR is in the Third Age).

Any Middle Earth experts know what could be happening in that time frame?

Far from an expert, but I imagine it could be after the fall of Morgoth and before Sauron initially rose to power. Lots of power struggles and roving bands of orcs and men. I'm sure they could find a dragon or two as well. Would be cool if it involved one of the Balrogs.

re: Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024, D: Kenji Kamiyama) - Anime movie

There is this:

https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Helm_Hammerhand

Spoiler:

Four years later in TA 2758, a combined force of Dunlendings under the leadership of Wulf, Corsairs of Umbar and Easterlings overran Rohan. Helm was defeated in battle at the Crossings of Isen, and withdrew into the Hornburg at Helm's Deep (which was later renamed in his honor). There, he endured a long siege.

While King Helm and his younger son Prince Háma were besieged in the Hornburg, a force of Dunlendings under the leadership of Wulf also besieged Edoras. Prince Haleth, King Helm's elder son, led the defence of Edoras. He was the last to fall defending the doors of the Golden Hall .

Shortly after Yule 2758, Prince Háma accompanied by a small force went out to search for food, but he and his men were lost in a blizzard and never seen again. The Hornburg held a large war-horn, and whenever it was blown, Helm would break through the Dunlending ranks, slaying many of their men. Helm's enemies came to fear him greatly during this time and it was believed that he became so fierce and terrible, that he slew many of them with his bare hands. It was also believed that when he grew hungry and had no food he ate men.

It was said that grief and hunger made Helm more ferocious. After one such sortie, Helm died and did not return; his body was discovered the next morning frozen in the snow still standing, his eyes open, ready to fight. This led to a belief among the Rohirrim and Dunlendings that even in death the wraith of Helm Hammerhand still wandered through Rohan, and defended the Hornburg. Helm died in TA 2759 at the age of sixty-eight. Prince Haleth and Prince Háma also died during the war; his nephew Fréaláf Hildeson, who defeated the Dunlendings, succeeded Helm.

Helm was called Hammerhand because of his great strength and prowess with his fists: he was known to fight barehanded. This is sometimes attributed to a superstition that if "he used no weapon no weapon would upon bite him".
Doesn't sound like it would make a terribly interesting animated feature; it would seem more appropriate for a short a la those "Histories and Lore" featurettes from the Game of Thrones blu-rays.

(And I would actually love to see some "History of Middle Earth" shorts done in the illustrated narration style of those Game of Thrones things, adapting stuff from The Unfinished Tales and Silmarillion.

(Actually, there are tons of fan-produced ones on Youtube explaining the history and mythology of Middle Earth in great detail.)

I think it looks like a very neat idea, though I'm not sure how they can end it without it being too depressing.

Also, apparently that rough winter also affected the Shire and the Hobbits were starving and Gandalf helped them out and began his long association with them. I wonder if they could slip that in too.

re: Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024, D: Kenji Kamiyama) - Anime movie

“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” — the original anime feature from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation — is set for release on April 12, 2024 from Warner Bros. Pictures, Variety can report exclusively.

Set roughly two centuries before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” “The War of the Rohirrim” will explore the exploits of Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan, and the creation of Helm’s Deep, the stronghold featured in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.”

Kenji Kamiyama (the TV series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”) is directing with “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” producer Joseph Chou through his anime studio Sola Entertainment, which has been working on the film since it was announced in June 2021.

As can be seen in this exclusive first look at conceptual art from the film, “The War of the Rohirrim” is also drawing much of its creative DNA from Jackson’s six features set in Middle-earth. Philippa Boyens, who was part of the Oscar-winning screenwriting team for “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, is executive producing the film. Phoebe Gittins, Boyens’ daughter, and writing partner Arty Papageorgiou are penning the screenplay based on a script from Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. And the creative team includes Richard Taylor, who won Oscars for makeup and visual effects for “The Lord of the Rings,” and Tolkien illustrator John Howe.

Voice cast announcements are expected soon.

“I’m in awe of the creative talent who have come together to bring this epic, heart-pounding story to life, from the mastery of Kenji Kamiyama to a truly stellar cast,” Boyens says.

“The ‘Lord of the Rings’ films took Tolkien’s masterwork to new cinematic heights and inspired a generation,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich. “It’s a gift to be able to revisit Middle-earth with many of the same creative visionaries and the talented Kenji Kamiyama at the helm. This will be an epic portrayal unlike anything audiences have ever seen.”

Warner Bros.’ movement on the anime “Lord of the Rings” film comes at a time when the studio is in a dispute with the Saul Zaentz Co., the longtime owner of “LOTR” film and TV rights, over whether Warner Bros. has done enough development on the franchise to maintain its hold on live-action and animated film rights. Variety reported last week that Zaentz Co. is putting its Tolkien holdings on the block, which spurred questions about “LOTR” activity within Warner Bros.

The last live-action Tolkien film, 2014’s “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” grossed $940 million worldwide; all six films have earned over $5.8 billion. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won 11 Oscars, including best picture, tying the record for a single movie.

“The War of the Rohirrim” is also totally separate from Amazon Prime Video’s Middle-earth series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which is set millennia before the events of Jackson’s movies.

I’m more interested in this than the Amazon show. Glad to see it’s still happening. Kinda felt like vaporware since it came out of left field.

Miranda Otto will be playing Eowyn again, as the narrator.

Update from some kind of exhibition.

https://www.theonering.net/torwp/202...-the-rohirrim/

Runtime is planned to be about 130 minutes. They're using mocap (not rotoscoping) to get the movements right.
Still due for spring of 2024, generally a good impression.

"Rohirrim" sounds like a medical term. "I can't go to work. My rohirrim is acting up."

It looks like onomatopoeia of someone clearing their throat.

Hmm... not quite what I was hoping for. Using the movies and score in the beginning is certainly a choice - I think most people will wish it was live action. (myself included)

Feels kinda DC-cartoon-ish to me.

"200 years before that, there was an older tale" sounds redundant

I'm not sure that the anime style fits well with Middle Earth.

If the story was set in Rhûn it might have interesting...

Not a fan of the style for this movie, or just not a fan of it at all? Ever try some Studio Ghibli?

I would say I was down for this if it were streaming, but I'm a bit iffy on a theatrical viewing.

I was okay with the anime style when first announced but seeing it now it seems a little much.

But I’m still very interested in this and if there is a Japanese dub available, I think that would give it a little more.

I'm a bit strange when it comes to dub vs sub. When it's a live action movie, I definitely prefer subtitles. But with anime I tend to prefer dubbing as the difference isn't as noticeable to me.
