Beau Is Afraid (2023, D: Aster) S: Joaquin Phoenix

EXCLUSIVE: Hereditary helmer Ari Aster looks to be heading back to the home that helped launch his career. Deadline is hearing that A24 is set to finance and produce his new film Disappointment Blvd., with Joaquin Phoenix on board to star.

Rumors had been swirling at the end of last year that Phoenix was considering this as his follow-up to his Oscar-winning performance in Joker, but insiders say at the time it was still only a discussion and nothing concrete. Once Phoenix officially committed to the project, the package was put together and taken out to buyers. While there was plenty of interest from other suitors, A24 always seemed in pole position after producing Aster’s previous hits Hereditary and Midsommar.

A24 had no comment.

Details are being kept under wraps for the project written and directed by Aster, but the plot is described as “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.” Alongside A24, Aster and Lars Knudsen will produce under their Square Peg banner.

For Aster, this marks a major score to land an A-lister of this caliber, especially since Phoenix’s star power couldn’t be more in demand following his Oscar-winning performance portraying the Clown Prince of Crime. It also shows how impressive this script is as Phoenix is known for being particular in what he signs onto; while he took his time in committing to the project, he never seemed to waver in his interest in teaming with Aster.

As for production, while a start date is unknown at this time, it is likely that Phoenix will shoot this before the Ridley Scott pic Kitbag, in which Phoenix will play Napoleon Bonaparte. Scott is currently prepping his crime thriller Gucci, making Kitbag’s production more likely for top of 2022.

Although this will mark his first film post-Oscar win, Phoenix can be seen next in Mike Mills’ C’mon C’mon, which he shot in 2019.

Phoenix and Aster are repped by WME. Aster is also repped by Elia.

Now this is exciting. That is a director/actor team up that any movie fan should be giddy over.

Love all of Aster’s stuff so far, but I will probably never get into Phoenix, so that’s the only part that disappoints me about this new one. But I will watch this no matter what.

re: Beau Is Afraid (2023, D: Aster) S: Joaquin Phoenix

EXCLUSIVE: In what is turning into an impressive cast for Ari Aster’s highly-anticipated movie, Broadway darlings Nathan Lane and Patti LuPone along with Oscar-nominee Amy Ryan and Kylie Rogers have joined A24’s Disappointment Blvd. starring Joaquin Phoenix. A24 came on earlier this year to finance and produce after Phoenix made it his follow-up after winning the Oscar for best actor for Joker. Aster, who’s past two films were also financed by A24, will write and direct with Aster and Lars Knudsen producing under their Square Peg banner. Elisa Alvares and Timo Argillander IPR.VC will exec produce.

Project details are being kept under wraps, but the plot is described as an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.

So I take it this will be Aster expanding outside of horror? I'm game, but this sounds like a slow burn drama for which there is little audience in this day and age, unfortunately.

The film has been retitled "Beau Is Afraid" and will be released next year. There have been reports that A24 has been battling with Aster about the run time, which is apparently now at 3 hours.

Not sure if related, but Aster made a short in 2011 titled Beau:

I wonder if that 3 hours was victorious for Aster or A24. When he announced this it was supposed to be 4 hours long.

I saw him standing in line for a screening at NYFF and I really wanted to go up to him and ask what was going on.

Still one of my most anticipated films of 2023. And it’s rare to get one of those before September in general.

This doesn’t look like a horror film at all, but I am guessing there will be some kind of crazy shit going on throughout.

I wonder how many ages Phoenix is playing in this

Wow that is different. Looks cool.
And both Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan seem to be channeling their Only Murders in the Building characters.

Yeah, that trailer almost plays it up like a comedy. With Ari Aster I’m not buying that.

Whatever kind of movie it is, I think it looks fantastic! That trailer certainly piqued my interest. It looks like there’s a million different things going on in this movie.

Looks a bit like I'm Thinking of Ending Things with an agoraphobic lead. Hopefully it ends up better than Amsterdam and Babylon.

Rated R for strong violent content and graphic nudity. Sounds like an Aster film

Definitely looks like something outside the box, but the run time is a bit of a turn off for me if true. Given the reason it's rated R and Aster's past, there's no way this is a true comedy.

I’m feeling the mystery. I want to know how it plays out. I hope it’s something new.

My guess is that he has mental illness that plays out in a real way to him, but not to others.

Weird choice to put Beau Bridges, Bruce Campbell, Jason Segel, and ... OK, I got nothing for the kid ... on the poster.

I'm still not sure what to make of this ... or whether I should watch the trailer or not.
