The Gray Man (2022, D: Russo Bros.) S: Evans, Gosling, de Armas - Netflix
EXCLUSIVE: Ana De Armas is set to co-star opposite Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in Joe and Anthony Russo’s big budget action thriller The Gray Man for Netflix. The Russos have been developing the project for some time at Sony and when the package went back on the market over the summer, Netflix was quick to acquire it and set Gosling and Evans to star. The film will be the biggest budget film in Netflix’s history on the feature side.
The Russos penned the script with a recent polish by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The Russos along with Mike Larocca will produce on behalf of AGBO as well as Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Chris Castaldi through their Roth Kirschenbaum banner.
The Gray Man is the debut novel by Mark Greaney, first published in 2009 by Jove Books. It is also the first novel to feature the Gray Man, freelance assassin and former CIA operative Court Gentry. The action thriller will follow Gentry (Gosling) as he’s hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former cohort of Gentry’s at the CIA. The film is based on the first installment of the best-selling The Gray Man book series.

I’m excited for this - I’m a big fan of the book series and Netflix is the perfect choice for it (not big enough to justify seeing in the theaters but well worth a watch at home).

Ryan Gosling is THE GRAY MAN and Chris Evans is his psychopathic adversary in the Netflix/AGBO spy thriller directed by Anthony and Joe Russo - available globally July 22 on Netflix.
Also starring Ana de Armas, with Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura and Alfre Woodard. Based on the novel The Gray Man by Mark Greaney, the screenplay is by Joe Russo, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
THE GRAY MAN is CIA operative Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), aka, Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death. But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.

Before the trailer I thought, this seemed like the most generic and uninteresting thing for the Russo brother to handle next.
After the trailer I'm thinking, OK it's another Captain America movie but darker

Looks like passable action entertainment but then again so did Gemini Man, which this trailer kept reminding me of for some reason. Lots of spectacle but felt hollow. Still, I'll watch Ana de Armas read the phone book for 2 hours, so I'll be there anyhow.

I know it was a Covid shoot but all the sets being empty just looks off to me.
I'll watch it for sure, but I think I'm one of the few not enamored with the Russo's output.

Also, after Cherry they no longer get the benefit of the doubt from me.
Still, I’m a fan of all three of those actors so I’ll check this out for sure.

Reviews look like more positive than negative. I was going to watch anyway since the talent involved and Netflix, but now I am really looking forward to it.

It’s playing at 2 theatres near me. I might check it out this weekend. Theatrical releases have been light lately. Looks like AMC and Regal aren’t showing it as what happened with the last 2 Netflix limited theatre releases (Army of the Dead and Red Notice)

Just got back from seeing it. It's better than most Netflix originals. The production quality is definitely movie-quality and not a TV movie. And it does have the star quality of a major movie.
There's some good action and a lot of great locations. There is a pretty cool plane crash sequence in the middle. I liked Gosling and Ana de Armas along with Billy Bob Thornton. The weak point for me was Chris Evans. Total over the top goofy mustache twirling villain and the mustache looked really goofy on him. I didn't like how the climatic fight scene was staged with him and Gosling. I actually arrived about 10 minutes late as I was finding parking and getting a drink. Yes 10 minutes late of movie content, so I'll probably re-watch it next week to see what I missed to start out the movie.
I liked Red Notice, the last big Netflix action movie, even though a lot of you here didn't. I think my top 5 of Netflix original action movies goes like this:
1. Old Guard - B+
2. Extraction: B+
3. Red Notice: B
4. Triple Frontier: B
5. The Gray Man: B-

I found the movie very enjoyable. Structuring the story like a novel with new locations serving as chapter headings, and a lengthy flash-back at the end of the first third were very effective.
Lots of swooping drone shots, like in Ambulance earlier this year. I guess this is going to be the new "bullet-time" visual that will soon be run into the ground.
Maybe I didn't understand something, but I was briefly pulled out of the movie by the scene where

Saw this last night and I liked it a lot. Enjoyed all the action scenes and it really looked great on a big screen. Since there are so many books, I wonder if they will continue this at all. Would totally be down for more movies.

I thought this kicked ass. Yeah the plot was nothing special but the action was awesome and both Gosling and Evans clearly had a lot of fun. That was contagious.

This was better than expected. Being PG-13 the violence isn't excessive and only 1 f-bomb. Sorry, guys but Ana keeps her clothes on. Plenty of action and fight scenes.

I still have 36 minutes to go but Ana De Armas running around launching RPGs all over the place and taking out a helicopter, the lady is becoming a National Treasure, lol. Fun film.
ETA: Finished it up. Glad I decided to watch it tonight.
