Movies That Spoof Television

Back in the day there was that subgenre of films that spoofed television. Do you have a favorite from this list? Are there ones I missed? Feel free to weigh in!

I used to have an unhealthy amount of UHF dialogue memorized and I still quote it way too often.

"Don't you know the Dewey Decimal system!?"

Shock Treatment spoofs a lot of different shows (game shows, doctor soap operas, political ads) as well as the idea of "reality television".

Isn't there some movie with John Ritter where he gets trapped inside the TV, Switching Channels or something?

Wes Craven's Shocker uses the same idea at the end, with the killer jumping across the dial through various TV shows.

It's called, Stay Tuned. It's in the poll.

Oh, and I totally forgot about Shock Treatment!

It’s a really fun movie. Always wished it would have gotten a sequel or better yet a series. Too bad Alan Rickman has passed though.

Dragnet was an odd but funny riff on the TV series.

I don't know how much of it is a television spoof (mostly the fake commercials and newscast) but Kentucky Fried Movie is still one of my favorite comedies of all-time. Dated, maybe, but still screamingly hilarious.

A few years back I struck up a friendship with one of the hot naked girls from the movie. She's now a 60-something grandmother. STILL hot.

Re: Movies That Spoof Television

I like a lot of them.
UHF of course.
Kentucky Fried Movie, but yeah, it would probably feel really awkward watching it now.
I actually rewatched Stay Tuned a couple weeks ago.

I voted UHF, I think it is the funniest and holds up the best, with Stay Tuned a second place (acknowledging that it is quite a bit more dated).

It's been many years since I last saw it, so I don't quite remember it, but maybe Terrorvision? (The Elvira-esque horror movie hostess is the only thing that comes to mind, natch.)

I was all ready to correct you about "The Ratings Game", -I thought it was from The '90s, -but I checked IMDB and it really was that old (1984). It was actually DeVito's first movie as director (before "Throw Momma From The Train") and made for Showtime.

Series 7: The Contenders a fake reality show, not exactly a spoof but really good.

Network doesn't lampoon a specific television program, but it's the best satire of television EVER!
